  1. 1. 5th bowler

    • Yes, Pandya and Jadhav are good enough
    • No, bring in Shami.

Long time no see.

I think we need Shami. Pandya bowls too short and Jadhav is unpredictable. Should we bring in Shami for Pandya? Shami should have been first name on team sheet for bowlers anyway. Jadeja can also be a decent option at 7 if Pandya doesn't play, though he hasn't batted yet.

Also, no clue why Yuvi hasn't bowled at all.

There's also this factor of Pakistani batting being so weak we need not worry about 5th bowler.

Hardik Pandya is a "priceless" player who can provide "a match-winning performance in any game he plays," according to Virat Kohli.

Kohli, the India captain, said he "would not think" of omitting Pandya from his team for the ICC Champions Trophy final and insisted he was the man to balance the side.

While Pandya has enjoyed relatively little opportunity with the bat in the tournament to date - he has twice come in towards the end of the innings and, after making 9 in 5 balls against Sri Lanka, thrashed an unbeaten 20 in 6 balls against Pakistan - he has bowled in all four matches claiming three wickets (at a cost of 60 apiece) and conceding 6.20 runs per over.

That makes him the most expensive bowler in the India squad over the four matches and has prompted questions over whether they might recall specialist seamers such as Umesh Yadav or Mohammed Shami for the final in his place.

But Kohli was adamant that he valued the all-round balance Pandya offers and suggested that, if India continued to invest in him, they would be rewarded with "a match-winning performance" in a "crisis."

"I would back a guy like Hardik who provides you so much balance in conditions that he can be effective as a bowler and his batting is priceless," Kohli said. "If you're chasing a total and you need eight an over and you've lost wickets, he's a guy who can still win you the game. He can give you a match-winning performance in any game that he plays. As a fielder, as well. It's very hard to find a package like that.

"That's the kind of belief he has in his ability and we have that belief in him. You need to back guys like him on a regular basis and you will get those results where the team is in crisis and he stands up and gives a match-winning performance.

"So far he's been really good in the tournament. When he bowls well, it's a total relief for me as a captain because he can get you seven good overs. He can get you a couple of wickets, as well, and then with the bat and the field we know what he can do.

"So I would not think of changing anything at this particular stage."

It's an emphatic yes.

Pandya is not droppable. The sum of parts provides great value

Replacable slots are Yuvi, Jadhav and 1 spinner. Shami can come in place of 1 of the 3

If we bring in Shami for a spinner we still are banking on Pandya and Jadhav for 10 overs.

Yes, both have the knack of providing crucial break throughs .... did not watch the game vs BD but heard that Pandya got avwkt of a no ball and had a catch dropped

The fielders will have to bring their A game too

Pandya is a jack of all trades but master of none and we need the masters not jacks.

What is the use of a player who cannot bowl ,  may not get to bat ot bat for 10-20 runs and field for like 10-20 balls in the whole game coming to him ?

Rather get specialized players to get the job done

Don't think Kohli will change XI for final. It will most likely be the same combo.

A team allocates a slot or two for "jack of all trades" as the sum of their parts provide great value .... Pandya's performance in one department if not more is almost guaranteed

On the other hand if likes of Yuvi (a support batsman) gets out soon or a bowlers is off on the day (not all bowlers do well on the day), there is no further use for them. That is one of the reasons, teams tend to play 1 or 2 utility players / all rounders in LOI

Pandya can hit from ball 1, has potential to provide break throughs with the ball (esp with teams looking to target him, there is opportunity to get ekts too) and change the game in the field with a stunning catch or a run out. These capabilities provide the captain with options on field

In test matches, allocating all slots to "masters who should be in form" is the better option as there is an opportunity to make a come back

Fielding is a department based on which solely one should not be selected as this department is expected toe be fulfilled by all to a minimum international level which most of the team now does.

The "jack of all trades" department right now is being served by  Yuvi/ Jadeja and Jadhav , all of whom provide a better return and a more practical option.   If Yuvi/ Jadhav / Jadeja fail in one then they can make it in another but Panday in that sense in CT atleast and for the sake of the argument I will focus only on Batting/bowling - is below all those three.

Pandya can hit from ball 1 with but with only 7 ODI matches is only good for 10-20 odd runs .   But if as a bowler he cannot provide abreakthrough and he has been quite poor against SA / SL / BD - his utility gets limited to only 2-3 overs of batting which he might have a chance to do.

If India has to bowl 50 overs , rather have players who can focus on doing one job better then dabbling in everything - Yuvi/ Jadhav and Jadeja are doing that.  If Pandya goes for Econ of 6 or more and picks no wickets in middle over - his role is redundant.
