He is kinda like Sehwag. Not that good in certain conditions but in SC+WI a fearsome match winner. Match winners like Viru and Ash you can count on one hand. We need such players if we are to be consistently ranked in the top. Without a guy like Ashwin we wouldn't be sweeping the opponents like we have been doing since 2015.

Granted they are familiar conditions but to be a great team, home dominance is a prerequisite. Check the ATG WI and Aus teams, they would crush opponents mercilessly in their backyard. Even in other sports like football, basketball, tennis if you have home domination or court domination(eg surfaces in tennis like clay for Rafa) you can be rest assured to be a top dog in the rankings even if you aren't that good in foreign territory/weaker surfaces. In the 2000s we let off too many teams lightly with modest 1-0 wins in stead of crushing them at home. When we finally had that bad run in 2011 within a span of 6-7 months we fell from no 1 to no 6. SA made the same mistake in recent years. Even though Proteas have a tremendous record overseas their 1-0/1-1/2-1 and occasional home losses to Aus and Eng ensured they were never no 1 for long. Man to man that SA team was almost as good as Ponting's team but never had that ruthlessness at home.

Without the crushing victories in the last 3 years in which Ash was the main player, we wouldn't be no 1 or be no 1 with a minuscule lead. By the time we go to SA we will have a lead of 10-12 points over the next best team and hence more cushion even if we lose. I rate top ranking in test cricket very highly. If this team can string together 4-5 years as year end no 1 team, that will be  a stellar achievement, something only done by the mighty WI and Aus teams of the past. A lot of that will depend on a fit and in form Ashwin.

What a load of crap. He was back from injury bowling on a road. He should have never been picked against another subcontinent side on a road.

  1. What injury ?
  2. Secondly, If you are medically cleared to play - show up !  No excuse to play like a 12th player
  3. Horrendous when playing in ODI/T20s and esp overseas
  4. The same road where Rasheed / Shadab and Rashid bowled quite well through out ?
  5. He was horrible in every match he played in the CT !

If anyone is impressed by Ashwin I feel bad for them. He is the most physically unfit person I have seen. His body fat is very high for a first class player and he is unfit. Needs to put on some muscle mass. Pathetic.

He should have been ethical and said no. Team comes first. He is not that good.

LOI have become more about wrist spinners now, every side is pref a leggie these days rather then an off spinner or finger spinner

Ashwin shud only be picked incase opp has many leftie and pitch offers turn but in latter case also jadeja scores over him as he adds so much as a fielder

You missed Australia/NZ/SA/England .  He has hardly played overseas.

So how is he quality if he has hardly played outside? Look, you use this conveniently.  The only thing contested against the other place on this forum was spinners being quality. And you shoot back with the stats implying you consider them to be quality. Its sad to see you consider Ashwin quality inspite of him having not played much outside.

He has won more series for India than  anybody  in Indian history including Tendulkar, Kumble, Kapil.  Everyone had a chance to play at home. Why couldn't they do what Ashwin did.
