At home they are ok but when they travel abroad they have to be more proactive and score faster.Today Vijay got dropped twice.

People here are claiming Vijay as some great opener better than Sehwag .No he is not  greater than Sehwag in any means.

Neither of them are easily catchable. Anywho he is not compared with Sehwag.  Overseas when the ball is jagging around I would trust MV more than any of the other openers we have.  I do not want a scenario where Kohli gets to crease by 2nd over which is what will happen if Dhawan/Rahul open. Atleast one of the player should be sensible enough to see off the  new ball not flashing the bat around.

Bloody brilliant, proper old school test batsmen. A pity Kohli prefers high SR walleh flash in the pans like Rohit Sharma and Dhawan over these 2 gems.

Sure, you are right. But I really wish Rohit had the grit in his mind to combat the vagaries of playing test cricket just like Vijay. He would have been definitely been a good and desirable player in that case. Kohli's preference would have been justified.

Look at his favorite shot in the one dayer. Almost all his favorites are hitting the ball in the air unlike Kohli who can find gaps and plays ground strokes. Rohit's fondness for airy fairy shots will always make him an unreliable test batsman. He doesn't even have such an organized defense.

He is the best opener we have got, I wouldn't play Dhawan in SA or England where Philander and Anderson will eat him alive.

The problem for  overseas is if they play out a session like they did today before lunch you are just one wicket away from disaster.Scoring is also as important as surviving there. They just need to improve their strike rotation then they would become  a force overseas too.

These are two are the most important players in our Test team. Seriously, how can we even think of dropping them. Kohli himself can learn a bit or two from these two on how to bat in a test match especially in tough situations. Unnecessary emphasis and pressure was put on players to show aggression in the beginning. Hopefully Kohli has understood the importance of having different characters in a Test team and he would not push everyone to become like himself.

Both Vijay & Pujara have their negatives .Just because they have been so succesful as partners doesn't mean India can afford to play both of them  on and on in each and every match moving forward.Vijay though have been very much an all conditional player is past 33 years. Pujara is yet to prove a lot in tough alien conditions. The need of the times is to develop Iyer,Shaw and other promising youngsters in their places  in dead rubbers , against weaker teams , in home conditions etc etc with an eye for the future.

Common tendency and reactions among peoole whenever their favorite comeback(Vijay) over someone who took his place(Dhawan).

Even though Vijay is the right choice , he is no legend at this time. The guy’s average has been reduced to under 40 so it just shows that he has been inconsistent recently and that includes at home.  Your average won’t go down below 40 if you have been rock solid at home.

Overseas tours will decide now. Same goes for our 3-4-5, real test is coming for all Kohli and co. They have done well in the past while touring different places and I won’t chanfe my 3-4-5 for anyone but that is all history now, they got to do it all over again as its a new year and new season.

Vijay like our 3-4-5 deserves a go ahead too and should start rightly.

Poor and biased post. I dont see anyone claiming him to be a legend here or any of the threads. I see very concise specific role being mentioned for him and the fact that he and puj seem to get big partnerships very often. One can post their preferences everywhere and but pretend they are based on facts they cant.

My preference is Vijay too but he is not the best opener out there in the world as being claimed in many threads recently if pyou see some other posts. Now with so many posts, opinion about same player from other threads is bound to spill over to another Vijay thread. Sometimes you have to get the point of the post instead of taking every word of the post so seriously that it might hurt you.

Not everyone in the thread is going to come and say yes, he should play etc at home always. We need to get the discussion going about other aspects and that is what the forums are for to share your opinion and to not just come in the thread write “Yes, I agree” but instead foruns are to expand the discussion further.

Opinions should be backed with substance to spark debates buddy.

For instance are you saying stats are wrong in this case. I mean vijay and pujara did not bat all those games ?

Again you are picking and choosing what I said, I mentioned Vijay, Pujara, Kohli all in same breath that they all are going to start in South Africa, and must start but everything they did in the past is history and this is new season and they must be performing.

Please read the bottom part of my post again which I posted earlier. I have mentioned how Vijay is like our 3-4-5 and should be a go ahead as he has scored in the past. Its just that I am used to mentioning all the wrongs a player is doing too in my post and nt just the good stuff, which might put off some fans of certain players but I don’t care about that as I write what I feel is important and in this case what is important was that Vijay did drop his average to under 40. That is all I am saying. Even with mentioning that I have said that he must go ahead and should play like how our 3-4-5 are going to be picked without any forethought.

M Vijay probably did not go on to capitalize on his decent starts. But he consistently showed everyone in the team  about how to leave the ball outside the off stump. If Kohli wants not to be exposed to new ball too many times he better persists with MV..

I would still prefer Dhawan over Vijay in all conditions except green. Only at present though. In future would like to have some young promising kid who knows his offstump as good as Vijay to take over.

He will start and it is up to to him to be more proactive and score more .

But it is not viable to pick a team based on conditions as it is not fair to either of the batsmen. If Kohli's intention is to go in with just 5 full time batsmen and Saha who is an average wicket keeper batsman then he has to go with a reliable line up not flashy line up.  Any top order collapse will lead to India getting bundled out cheaply given how weak our lower order is.
