MS Dhoni's performance in England and role in winning 2007 series

Somehow he consistently did well in England. He was probably our 2nd best batsman in 2014 series outbatting Kohli, Pujara and Dhawan. Scored 349 runs at avg of 35 with 4 half centuries.

 

Even in 2011 series, he was easily 2nd best batsman after Dravid outperforming Laxman, Sehwag, Gambhir. Scored 220 runs at avg of 31.4 with 2 fifties.

 

But his best  came in 2007 when 209 runs at avg of 52 with 2 fifties. India won that series 1-0 and Dhoni saved the match for India in first test by scoring 76 unbeaten with India 9 wickets down. He also scored 91 in last test and him along with Kumble ensured that match was out of the hands of  England. 

 

Zak, RP Singh, Karthick, SRT and Dhoni were main contributors of that series wins.

2007 and 2014 was pretty good but in 2011 dont go by numbers he never scored when it was needed ,both innings in lords and nottingham

He was very good (numbers don't give the full picture) in 2007 and 3rd best in 2014. In 2011 he was so-so, but clearly among overseas countries he developed a method to excel in UK, full props.

Neither Gambhir nor Sehwag were really fit in 2011. Sehwag was rushed back I remember. Was Dhoni the 2nd highest scorer in 2011? 

 

In 2007, he played a very important innings in the first Test to save the match. In my opinion, that's his best Test innings. In 2014, he was good as well.

At one point of time he was the world's best ODI batsman. And he has played like world's best in many many matches. I think he should bat at 4. It will be much better for Team India.

it's interesting that he only found a way to counter overseas conditions in UK but not Oz and SA (probably not NZ too).

He slipped out of ODI rankings just in 2017.. He was in top 10 before that

Bloody weird knock that . Batting to save test match and played some big shots areial lol showed more Intent then saving a match then does in white ball currently lol

His defensive technique wasn't as sound back then so he just went for runs

Yes. His defensive technique has improved by leaps and bounds. I believe he should make a return to Test cricket. Kohli will also need his help while captaining overseas

Only reason why management might be worried is that he might do another mid-series retirement.  

 

If that happens again, will have to rely on FTB and HTB like Kohli, Pujara, Rahane, Rohit in that case.
