Mohammed Shami passes yo-yo test; available for the Test series selection.

@express bowling Another observation based on white ball cricket...may sound harsh but Bumrah seems vulnerable in high pressure situations. That is a concern because test cricket tests one's mental toughness unlike any other format. Not every day will be rosy especially overseas and against top teams, he may go for long spells without wickets and catch drops, bad luck, big partnerships, searing conditions, playing catch up (courtesy batsmen), defending moderate totals etc.

Shami, Bumrah and Bhuvi will be my first 3 fast bowlers in tests in England.  Will choose Umesh if we play a 4th specialist pacer, which I am in favour of.

As the test series is long, it would be a good idea to choose 6 specialist pacers in the squad, and Rajpoot and Ishant could be the other 2.

So you don't have faith in Ishant Sharma 2.0?  I think he's miles better than Rajpoot at the moment.  Given Umesh's tendency to blow hot and blow cold, I'd say its a tie between Ishant and Umesh for the 4th slot.  Umesh right now seems to be back to the top of his game, like he was in the home tests against Aus.

test cricket does not have high pressure of T20 or even ODIs. Test is the easier format to play pressure wise

i have to agree...

Umesh vs Ishant will be the contest..but may be Umesh will edge Ishant out..as Umesh will have opportunity in the loi's.

If Ishant 2.0 means Ishant after his 2018 county stint, then we have not seen him bowl much. Only a handful of overs in the test match against Afghanistan.

In that match, his stock delivery was the inswinger. I think you would agree that good inswing bowlers are those who are both quick and skiddy ... because that is what gets you bowleds and LBWs.   Ishant is more a bouncy fast-medium bowler with some quick spells.

His inability to think and adapt to the situation will always told him back  (  as is the case with Umesh  )

The reason why I think that Rajpoot can work in England is because he is a natural outswing bowler who bowls a wonderful line for an outswing bowler. This maybe ideal in England.  The advantage that he has over typical swing bowlers is that, he is tall and can hit the deck hard for bounce and seam movement if the ball is not swinging.  His weakness maybe his ability to sustain pace in test matches. We don't have much evidence about this aspect to come up with an informed opinion.

Navdeep Saini, who is quick and skiddy and brings the ball in,  would be my pick over either Ishant of Rajpoot, while bowling in Asia and even Australia.

Your point about Umesh is a valid one. We don't know whether we will get Dr. Jekyl or Mr.Hyde.  But, given his current form, I am willing to try him in the 1st test.

Considering all formats, I think top 3 seamers from Asia are -

1)Amir

2)Hasan Ali

3)Bumrah

What has Amir done in test matches or ODIs  ?

What has Hasan Ali done in tests  ?

Bumrah has low averages in all 3 formats.

Shami has done really well in both tests and ODIs.

Both Shami and Bumrah are ahead of either Amir or Hasan as all format bowlers.

Even before his county stint, Ishant has arguably improved.  And he's the one guy who can be relied on to give you a big number of economical workhorse overs.  As good as the bowlers can be individually, people tend to overlook the fact that test bowling units have to hunt as a pack, and maintain pressure.  Given the fact that India can't assume that Jadeja will be bowling a ton of quick tight overs, the 3rd pacer's ability to maintain control and pressure becomes quite important.  Umesh and Shami both have demonstrated a distinct weakness in this aspect.

Apart from the CT17 final, has Bumrah succumbed to pressure in an important match  ?   I have seen him hold his nerve in some critical limited over match situations.

Moreover, test matches are more about sustaining intensity over long periods rather than short term high pressure situations.

Only improvement I saw in Ishant was vs Afghan he bowled a much fuller length and attacked the stumps more instead of bowling back of length on the 5th stump line and being "unlucky".
