He also deserted the team in Aus, in tests, someone like Swann or Trott were called cowards for that.

Problem With Sourav, he was very conservative captain moreover his ability has a batsman never rose and he was totally dependent on other batsmen.

 

He gets lot of publicity as a winning captain overseas which I don't think is a reality.

 

Kohli on other hand has elevated his batting to new heights and other than his constant changes I find Kohli the better captain.Mind you he still need to grows on tactical side which is overrated in my view.He also needs to stop constant chopping and changing the players.

 

Tactics on the field count for  nothing if you don't have good team or have a captain that can't get best out of each player.

MSD learnt plenty of things under him and glad that it is still going on great. Completely changed Indian cricket. Real masters of the game. Sad that some fools still want to be ignorant.

the undisputed best Indian captain for me has been Kapil Dev. First criteria needed is leading from the front. He being himself such a great multi dimensional player ticks that column perfectly.Secondly he always had a mediocre team to lead with .With that team he achieved some great results like 83 world cup, 0-2 loss to the GOAT team WI in tests, a drawn series in AUS(had it not for bad luck IND could have won the series in AUS),2-0 series win in ENG etc etc. Both in WI & AUS  and also in 83 world cup, he was virtually great in every sense in all departments.What more is required of a GOAT captain???????

I agree Kapil is very underrated as a captain, if Kapil was leading today he would have a had lot more time and wins than he actually got then.

BCCI was run by fools then and also regionalism was rampant back then.His five test losses came against arguably greatest cricket team.Moreover he was a lone workhorse as a bowler even at home. 

 

No captain was winning a test against that 1983 WI team.  Pakistan and NZ with lot of help from home cooked umpiring managed some wins.

 

1983 Indian team winning the world cup is still beyond belief.That team had no business of winning that cup that too against that WI team.

another important point .....in those days captain had not much influence on BCCI  when compared to what we sees with Kohli or even with Ganguly, may be because of much worse  media influence those days.A captain had no great voice so much so that BCCI played musical chair with Kapil ,Gavaskar etc etc.Naturally  it can be assumed that Kapil could assert very less  influence on team like selection policies, fixture setting etc etc when compared to a Kohli or Ganguly.It was against such odds that he produced such results.These add even more to his captaincy credentials

Only high under Dhoni was winning in New Zealand after 25 years drawing the 2010 Test series in South Africa and winning against depleted Windies away in 2011 after that apart from that it was downhill under him.
