Saw Gladiator, Braveheart, 300, and The Patriot recently, which brought me to this topic. So many great cult classics over the years. This genre had so many inaccuracies as well. Braveheart had only 2-3 accurate things in the whole movie. List out the best ones over the years and your favourite ones.

Can't believe no one mentioned the historical master piece that is Mohenjadaro.

Lagaan and 1942 A love story deserve mentions too.

We are not talking of historical lolworthy movies here.

I have to see Ben hur. How is it? Kingdom of heaven I heard is not that good. Original that is. I heard the directors cut is fantastic. Same for Troy as well. Spartacus is another good classic.

Lol Mohenjo-Daro really? And lagaan and 1942 are not historical films. Even though they are set in a earlier time period and all(British era).

Reminds me, I need to watch Haqeeqat among other Bolly war movies of the past. Madras Cafe must be the best bolly war movie I've seen, Border & Lakshya are good TP.

KoH director's cut is AMAZING.

Ben Hur is a little bit mopey, preachy and less about a war film than a film from the POV of a 'rags to riches quasi-turncoat' story.

The best war film you will probably ever see is Das Boot.

The best war entertainment on TV however, is not a film, but a 12 part mini series called Band of Brothers.  *EASILY* the best show ever made about war, period. Its the 'Godfather part-II' of war genre.

PS: Das Boot is in German. However, it is one of those movies, where you don't need to understand the language, to understand the powerful storyline, emotions, etc. of the characters.

Yeah, I heard of it. I can always watch it subtitles as well. Have no issues :). Have to see Downfall as well.

Adding to some that are already mentioned...

Rescue Dawn (best Vietnam war movie)

Full Metal Jacket

Apocalypse Now

Platoon

Killing fields

Longest Day

Haqeeqat (best Indian war movie)

Cold Mountain (civil war movie)

Bad movies that I don't rate them high

Patton

Lawernace of Arabia

Bridge over river kwai

(very slow, uninteresting self indulging boring movies)

Atonement (pointless drivel)

Glory is a decent movie set during the US Civil War which is based off the true story of one of the first African American units in the US Army
