Now that team has been selected, we must look to optimise the resources.

 

The problem we face are

1. We can lose early wickets in swinging conditions

2. No established no 4 

3. No power hitter at no 5.

 

My proposed solution:

 

If we lose an early wicket, then Vijay Shanker should come at 3 and Virat at 4. Vijay Shankar is better at playing swinging ball then K L Rahul.

 

Also KL Rahul should come at 5 as the ball is not swinging by then. K L Rahul is very good player but sucks in swinging conditions....by continuously sending him up the order in swinging conditions, his confidence has been destroyed. But he is better then Jadhav if the ball is not swinging as he can hit sixes and time the ball while Jadhav has to really hunt for the gaps with unorthodox and risky shots. Also Jadhav cannot hit sixes easily. So I would try out the following combo in our warm up games

 

1. Rohit

2. Shikhar

3 Vijay Shankar ( seems to have decent technique forswinging conditions)

4. Kohli

5. K Rahul ( power game better than Jadhav if ball is not swinging)

6 MSD

7 Hardik

8  Any spinner based on condition

9 Bhuvi

10 Shami

11. Bumrah

Exactly what vaughan said.Pant's exclusion is a massive fail.

 

We dont have left hander in middle order and we dont have the explosive ower in middle order to make/chase 330 plus scores in belter pitches.

 

This world cup is gone probably seeing dhawan and rohit's form have also taken an inconsistent turn of late.

Among those selected, Dhoni, Rohit, Dhawan, DK, Jadhav, Bhuvi, Shankar, Shami, Jadeja and most likely Chahal will all be gone by the next world cup in India.

 

Only Kohli (if he survives the disappointment of not winning a WC as captain), Rahul, Hardik, Kuldeep and Bumrah will remain. Such a thoughtless selection without any vision.

 

For comparison, even 2015 squad was better. Dhoni, Kohli, Rohit, Dhawan, Rohit, Jadeja, Shami and Bhuvi - the core of this world cup's group were there as well.

Kohli 

Vaughan very well points out - kohli needs a heloing hand on field so had dhoni been injured pant wud have been no help to his captaincy . Dk has been captain of KKR so he wud be helpful to kohli as a proxy captain

That is vaughan's reason.

Kohli is a legit part of selection process.

They would not have to hide his name and say a senior player in the team.

I would put karthik's selection on more on Selectors uselessness than on any one player or captain wishes. Pant to be fair has not looked anyway near ready , he looks such a hit and miss. I still would have slected him.

KKD in all likelihood will not be in the playing XI ahead of either Rahul or Shankar.

I am sorry but how can anyone say Shankar is a good selection for no4. I don't know if  there is anything in shankar's game to think that he will be a success at no4. Pant atleast has couple of 100s in test cricket.They need to take two out of the box calls one for fast bowler and one for specialist batsman. They did neither. This team is so light on batting and fast bowling.

 

If IPL has hurt Pant's chances , what the heck has Shankar done in IPL. He has done nothing to show he is good candidate at no4.
