Vernon Philander to retire after England Tests

Vernon Philander has announced his intention to retire from international cricket after the upcoming Test series against England.

He had a good career largely based on bouncy surfaces and under cloudy conditions. He had a good strike rate for his speed once competing with Steyn and Bond. Does get bounce because of his height and good seam presentation. Always putting the ball in the right areas and nibbling it in or out from the batsmen. He was a good foil for Steyn. Wishing him good luck for his post career ambitions

 

PS - Wishing him also to take a lot of wickets and beat the poms

I thought this guy just started his test career, then reality struck it's close to a decade. Time has flown away rapidly and I am getting old .Anyways, he had a wonderful career and was integral part of a champion SA side for couple of years.

He definitely is, if BK can't stay fit then he's out of the equation completely! And Vern even with his pot belly has managed to survive in test cricket longer & more consistently, BK as of now isn't in the same league.

More  comparable to trundler Mohd. Abbas but Philander has been very successful compared to other trundlers.

IMO, the greatest trundler of all time, and I say that with utmost respect. Never had much pace, but overcame that with good channel and movement. This shows if you do not put  the ball in the right place, pace is not much of a weapon.

Somerset have confirmed that they have agreed personal terms with South Africa seamer Vernon Philander ahead of his signing as a Kolpak player, although the club do not expect to complete the signing until the new year.

Philtrundlerer could have played another couple of years but for Kolpak, it's ok though .

He has been a great match winner for saf at home

Kyle Abbott was the superior bowler - taller, quicker and even slightly more accurate - but he was forced to go Kolpak. Philtrundler was quality in seaming conditions but those figures of his are a bit misleading.

he doesn't have pace but has incredible discipline. Keeps the ball in that channel outside the off stump. Doesn't have the pace to be a strike bowler but he is an invaluable part of the side. And handy with the bat too.

 

Saffers will miss him, especially at home

Started as ODI player but after making late entry in Test cricket was outstanding specially in SA, NZ, Eng and Aus. A useful lower order batsman and really worked on accuracy as well as movement both ways.

Morkel, Steyn and now Philander - the gun attack SA had, especially in seaming and swinging conditions, in the 2010s is finally gone.

 

Philander was a proper green track bully. Funny thing is such bowlers are hailed by cricket pundits while FTB batsmen are assailed for lack of ability to deal with swing and seam.
