How dare you speak like that about the besht ever Indian captain? Gill and Shaw have to relaunch themselves as middle order batsmen if they want to play for India. Poor Kohli is just doing the best with what he's got. In fact India punched above their weight to make it to the Semis because of Kohli and his buddies.

Are you trying to get some recident ICFer attention , who admire Kohli more than manju admire kaali daal.

I have always wanted Virat to bat at 4 , it solves our MO issues to a large extent . Just need to find one other player @5 , but even a youngster will benefit playing alongside some one like Virat in pressure situations .

That said , this move is more to accommodate Dhawan rather than for team benefit  and in that process they are going to screw up Shreyas Iyers chances of cementing his place( Not a fan of Iyer , but deserves his chances for next few series) .

Better than Rayudu and Jadhav so far. His First Class record is also very good as far as ODI is concerned. T20 could be a different scenario though.

On another note, making Rahul keep could be a masterstroke from the 'think tank'. Ofcourse this may mess Rahul and any lean patch will give an opportunity to put him back in bench and get Rohit, Dhawan and Kohli as 1,2,3 in ODI and in T20 as well. Putting Rahul back in bench and openly announcing he is the successor of Dhawan through words of praise by Kohli and Sastry will also close the door for Mayank, Gill, Shaw..virtually anybody else till next WC. So Rahul can be deprived to benefit a certain group of people and then exploited to limit exposure to other promising players. Then it also shuts down chances for Pant and highlighting keeping frailities of Rahul as an example, they will get Dhoni prior to WC T20. Dhoni can't straight walk into the team given that he has taken sabbatical and Pant is slowly getting into his groove, but a decent show in IPL and keeping errors from Rahul will be easy to highlight a void in that department and create a buzz for the need of Dhoni.

I know this looks far fetched and hopefully I am proven wrong, but then recent past in Indian cricket is stranger than fiction. Long live King Kohli and Indian cricket.

Iyer is gun against spinners.. will do well against team who will feature 2 spinners in their playing eleven (very unlikely).. however.. he would be required to prove his credentials against express pace attack.. he certainly will be tested by Australian pace battery...

He has strike rotation ability..& is young this makes his stakes high in Indian middle order.. however his batting against extreme pace is there to be seen.. however he has the ability to come good.. going by his ipl credentials

Dhawan is a bad T20 player but a margin between good to great ODi player. different formats. Dhawan is gun in this format. In WC his early exit gave India a major trouble.

Dhawan has played his role in ODI and everybody appreciates it. But he is inconsistent offlate and by next world cup he is likely to degrade  Time to groom in next set of people, Dhawan can always be in the mix  if Rahul, Mayank, Gill fails. In fact Rahul has been in great touch in white ball cricket off late, so right time to get him a platform like what was provided to Rohit. He has started showing signs to regain his confidence and can be real deal in LOI cricket for team. Mayank is the outstanding opener in List A and India A games in last 24 months across the world not just in India. I strongly believe potentially he is better than Dhawan if given a chance and can serve the team for next 5-6 years . He is right now at the peak of his career, extremely focussed and hard-working. And finally Gill is considered the future of Indian cricket by vast majority of experts. He is one guy who can shine in all three formats if nurtured properly.

Firstly this a 50 overs game and there are no big stakes as such even if india looses the series .

Why this desperation i do not know to play Dhawan , Kedar etc in these matches .

All these 50 over bi laterals should be used to build your team for WC 2023 because you will need to test each alternatives with 30 odd matches minimum . For eg: No.4 - > Iyer need to be tested first ,then you need to find another one who can fit No.4 - That means almost 60 matches .

Do not think its 3 years way ,  Just think of it , T20 may be 6 months away , but apart from top 3 , most others will not get even 4 games where they can get a decent hit.  Same is the case for WC23 .

Any sane captain on his own would have said post WC 19 , that these are my preferred choices for opening , no.4  No. 5 etc  for Next WC and want to give them a continuous run say 15 matches .

He does not do it on his own , When selectors designate and provide him those options , he is trying his best not to give them opportunities .

Clearly selectors have given KL as opener , Iyer as No. 4 , Pant as keeper . but they are not given a free run.

No one denies Dhawan's contribution in 50 overs , but you also need to think alternatives as he, rohit , kedar all will be 37-38 by WC.

Not advocating  ditch Dhawan straight away.

You should select your team in these matches in such a way, each of these 3 guys will play in the slot designated for them without break . The change should happen among the seniors. While KL is one opener , the other one should be rotated between Rohit & Dhawan.  Reason is -there is nothing you want to gain by playing Seniors . Their pedigree is known , there cannot be any higher ceiling than what they have done already, they do not need experience any more . Let Iyer play at  4 t & Pant at 5 till they succeed or fail for at least  15 games

Kohli can come at 4 , and give chance to Iyer at 3 wherever overs remaining is less in a match .

You cannot blame selectors this time , except for Kedar, its the idiot TM which screwing up all and they have not learnt anything from last 4 years' fiasco.

India could have won 2-3 World title from 2014 till 2019  but what we have is big ZERO.

Not because lack of talent , but because wrong selections made just to accommodate  favored ones .

The story is still going on even in 2020 .

SURELY we need a non-nonsense selection group who will only provide team members who are considered as WC 23 probables and also the roles for which they are picked atleast for next 2 years . Captain has to stick to that or else get lost .

If Pant is picked as WK , you cannot bench him and play KL as WK . Its just not done !

But the timing of the series is weird, sandwiched between two T20 series.
