bendit100
Firstly this thread should be about requirements of the Indian team at no 5 and no 6 spot and focus should be on whether Pant meets those requirements ? Pant has List A average of 29 and SR of 105. Is that good enuff ? Link to comment
Sgattick10
Pant has the ability to be the next Jaya or Gilly or Sehwag. He doesnt have to be Kohli or Dhoni, we have a few players who can emulate both dhoni or kohli but no in sehwagesque mode, Pant cam be that. I just hope BCCI handles him with maturity esp when we have a mercurial, impatient captain. One more thing, if Pant doesnt get enough chances or is sidelined constantly, he should move to Eng or Aus and apply citizenship there, he's only 21 he deserves to play Int cricket Suhaan, Mosher and zen 1 2 Link to comment

bendit100
I am not sure if Dhoni's style of cricket will work in today's cricket. I believe Kohli is a much better finisher than even when Dhoni was in his prime. Kohli can really pump up the big shots at critical times. However Kohli's role is not to finish games. So I think a classical player who can hit it big would be better than Pant who kind of reminds me of Yusuf Pathan, a hack. Gill maybe better than Pant and more consistent than Pant even though he is a classical player. Link to comment

That would be an injustice to him if you pick that guy as a specialist bat over this guy. Link to comment
Vickydev
There is too much toxicity around the guy in LOIs. It's even affecting his test selection and so would be better for him to be picked for just test cricket. Let him concentrate on this format, re-build his reputation and force the selctors to take a look at him. The standards are too high for the guy in LOIs with increasing competition for now and it's affecting his confidence. His game is not yet refined for MO in ODIs (Him getting opening gig is wishful thinking and not happening any time soon) . With vultures around, its better he is taken away from this atmosphere. He is still extremely young and he has proven he is the best wk bat in test, no hack as some are making him out to be. Pretty sure he will force the door open for ODIs as well. nevada 1 Link to comment

SUMO
Pant plays best when he is playing at strike rate of 100. He gets runs with normal cricketing shots. Problem comes in LOIs when he finds he needs to blast the opposition out. Thats when he loses his balance and head position. So atm tests are ideal for him, his normal game is destructive in tests. nevada 1 Link to comment

I won't be shocked if Kohli pushes Rahul into 'keeper's role after Saha's retirement. Things not looking good for Pant atm. Hope he has a spectacular IPL to force his way back into the T20 set-up at-least. Link to comment
Straight Drive
The only simialrities that reminds me of Pant and Gilchrist is both are agressive stroke-players irrespective of the format of the game and obviously both are left handers. Link to comment

A player has to have the capability to play as the situation demands..at 5 or 6, his primary role is to be a finisher....he may need to power hit or play the gaps based on conditions..above all he needs to read the situation and optimise the Indian score accordingly..Dhoni ofcourse is past his prime but he was one of the smartest cricketer with such limited ability and stroke play. The prime job of a #5/6 is to beat up on spinners and be the second openers to see off the new ball. Its not a coincidence that for highly specialist role of test opener, its usually the #3 and the #6 that have been used a stop gap in emergencies. Link to comment
