Why does our batting consistently underwhelm when batting first?

Forget par+ totals that you would expect from a strong batting unit against an NZ team short of skill, pace and confidence - 165 was about 15 runs short of par if not more.

4-0 scoreline for the series is misleading - Indian batting has won 1 game, and played  badly enough to lose 2.

Add to this the regular fielding screw-ups, its starting to look like a case of indiscipline and overly relaxed mindset.

Its not surprising that the hunger for top tier performances would wane a bit as the team keeps racking up wins.  But its a bad sign.

firstly we had wrong players like dhawan n dhoni who played safe n kohli n rohit also played that way

Now when we have Rahul, Iyer, Pant, pandya they havent played together enough , if and when they do they shud be allowed to play their natural game rather everyone following same template of Rohit n kohli style of batting.

We have kind of adopted a more enhanced  Pakistani approach batting first  which is post a defendable but middling target and let your strength which is bowling win you the game.

I don’t think we have the killer instinct of the old wi or Aus team where even at back to the wall situation someone would come in and play counterattacking cricket

India is top heavy as Indian bowlers cannot bat so top order tries to pace itself rather than setting the pace. While chasing they have no other option but go for the target.

Chahal who is worse than number 11 batted at number 9.Guy like Thakur is in the team more for his batting skills than his bowling.

It is the  cumulative effect of many factors  which is making India a very ordinary team when batting first.

YoYo mastered that approach where he would get to a 50 first and then play his shots .... but he was usually batting in the MO so would take advantage of picking singles

People follow sports to watch that kind of instinct .... otherwise it could, in some instances, be not better than watching the paint dry

India A just lost 2 out of 3 ODIs to NZ A, and are getting spanked in the 4 day game.

This was the first LO A series India A have lost in years - won everything in Eng, Aus, SA, WI, SL even in NZ last time. Not sure what is your point.

Point is to not get overly arrogant.

I don't think India A has set world on fire  with heavy scores in past two years.Other than Shaw who is still very unknown there is no explosive player in the system either.

Gill is more like Kohli than Jason Roy. You need that free flowing stroke makers who have ability to consistently score a 25 -30 ball 50s.Do we have any such players in system.

Because we don’t have natural power hitters (because we choose not to develop people like Pant), it’s too risky for our current players to play aggressively- they’ll likely lose their wickets and get bowled out for sub par total.

i feel India needs to promote likes of Thakur etc just to smash it out as a pinch hitter. Feel our batters barring Rahul are too protective of their wickets.

Pant had played all the white ball matches since World Cup before his concussion. How else is any player developed?
