Global.Baba Posted February 5, 2020 Posted February 5, 2020 One of the worst in recent times. Shaw,Shami,Kuldeep,Jadhav,Chahal,Bumrah are very poor fielders Iyer,Thakur,Aggarwal are just about adequate, So are our keepers. In fact we are playing a parttimer over the main keeper in the squad. nothing outstanding about their fielding. Haven’t seen a lot of Aggarwal though but from memory he is just about alright. Saini doesn’t seem like a natural athlete. Again haven’t seen enough. Kohli is a gun Ground fielder but a poor catcher but anyway better than the names above. That leaves us with Jadeja and Pandey who are world class and probably best in the world. Most times it is either one of them playing in X1. Our fielding standards are at an all time low. Obviously if you compare with 60s or 70s it may be better but adjusted for improvements in the game over the years this fielding standard is very low. I mean back in the days of Dada,Dravid,Laxman,Sehwag all of them were safe catchers. We can’t even guarantee that from the current lot including our better fielders like Kohli. Khota Posted February 6, 2020 Posted February 6, 2020 When people like Dravid say that fielding is overrated this is what you will get.
vvvslaxman Posted February 6, 2020 Posted February 6, 2020 amount of times they fumble on the boundary line is countless.
ganeshran Posted February 6, 2020 Posted February 6, 2020 (edited) Shami is a liability in the field. He either doesn't dive or ends up diving over the ball on the boundary Chahal is a comedy piece who is a source of entertainment with his fumbling Edited February 6, 2020 by ganeshran Unstable Joe 1
ShoonyaSifar Posted February 6, 2020 Posted February 6, 2020 Happens when the captain fool wants to surround himself with blind cheerleaders. Which other team will pick R Sridhar over Jonty Rhodes. beetle 1

I think Bumrah has improved his fielding over the years. He is still average though but looks like it was his own hardwork. Our fielding coach is a big leech.

After the WC, Kohli ensured he got his gang of cheerleaders as coaches. Will be foolish to think he did not pick Sridhar over Jonty. For a moment keep the ground fielding aside, number of missed catches year after year by this team should have seen Sridhar getting sacked a few years ago if we had a professional setup. Instead, he got re-appointed and even had his salary increased to 2.5 cr.
Straight Drive Posted February 6, 2020 Posted February 6, 2020 This isn't an all time low Indian Fielding. In 70's we had Gavaskar in slips and he wasn't a good fielder. Apart from Pataudi and Solkar we were totally rubbish. Roger Binny was good fielder and so was Kapil but both came later and even during their time they had just a amargonal improvement with Azharuddin as a gun fielder in that decade for India. In contemporary Indian cricket this boys field many x times better than the worst of Indian Fielding units. AuxiliA 1
singhprakash72 Posted February 6, 2020 Posted February 6, 2020 Traditionally Indians have always been the worst fielding side along with Pakistan (they at least had good keepers pre-Kamal era)...although fielding improved to certain level in last decade or so but we are again back to having 4-5 below avg fielders (compared to 1-2 previously). You can't hide them specially in ODI or T20...the worst part is catching even if you want to forget saving runs. This hurts the team a lot...in Test matches we have probably the worst slip cordon with only Saha being world class.

The point I am making is for example if you look at the fitness standards of 90s or even early 2000s to today it’s a huge difference obviously so you would assume that the fitness standards and the advanced training would be directly proportional to our fielding standards. Kohli is 10 times the athlete as sehwag or Dravid or Laxman but worse catcher. Munaf and Nehra types were not acceptable in 2011 Leave alone today and we have Shami,Chahal’s of the world still. We only have Jadeja and Pandey as standouts no different from Yuvi,Kaif and Raina back in the day. Our test fielding is pathetic. Can you imagine if we had dropped as many catches back in the day with that bowling attack we used to have. Trying to stop boundaries with boot or fumbling simple chances are not acceptable in 2020

But that doesn’t make him a great coach as coaching is a completely different ball game. Greg Chappell, Kapil Dev are examples. Did he improve any poor fielder’s performance during his reign as IPL fielding coach?
Frustrated Posted February 7, 2020 Posted February 7, 2020 This is the biggest concern. We are the only team whose youngsters (most, if not all) are very unathletic. Bumrah is probably the worst fielder in the world. Followed by chahal and kuldeep. Shami is also a big liability on the field (but he is old ,so understandable). Unless we improve the fielding , we can't defend any total. No matter how big we post.
Gollum Posted February 7, 2020 Posted February 7, 2020 (edited) Huge concern, we can help ourselves by getting a better fielding coach for starters. Also need a proper fortnight long boot camp before T20 WC/Aus series focusing just on fielding/catching. We won't become world class overnight but need to manage short term, at least aspire to be mediocre instead of downright shitty. rollingstoned Posted February 7, 2020 Posted February 7, 2020 We sucked at slip catching for a few years after the seniors retired because safe hands in the slip cordon is a function of stability. Constant chopping and changing will lead to dropped catches. To their credit rahane and rohit sharma have become excellent close in catchers but over the last 2 years our ground fielding and catching both have been underwhelming.
Gollum Posted February 7, 2020 Posted February 7, 2020 What has happened to our catching in white ball cricket? So long only slip catching in tests was a major issue.
Global.Baba Posted February 8, 2020 Author Posted February 8, 2020 Jadhav in the outfield is this a frickin joke? Vijy 1
