How long left for Pujara, Kohli & Rahane?

rahane - should have been dropped a while ago in home tests

pujara - 1 to 2 yrs

kohli - anywhere between 1 to 5 yrs but it will probably be much longer in reality thanks to cowardly selectors and "star" culture in our country

Pujara has won us two of biggest ever test series including one just 2 tests back. He can score a dozen blobs and should still keep his place in the side for an year or two if not more.

bit of a stretch he won us Aus series this time

Wasnt our highest scorer despite playing extra match and in matches we won he played a supporting role

People really have very short memories.

Sydney 50(176), 77(205)

Gabba 56(211)

Stoodup when we needed it the most . Those 50s were worth more than big 100s. Batted nearly 25% overs faced by us in the series (930 deliveries,  155 overs, 1365 minutes or nearly 4 Das of abating on his own). Ask The Aussie bowlers, especially Cummins who said he was tired of seeing Pujara. That was the psychological impact he had.

he has been poor after that and that reflects in our overall batting performance.

yeah those were great support knocks,no denying

but in MCG it was Rahane ton that won it and and in Gabba it was Pant and Gill

Pujara played great in holding up his end but our MVP clearly was Pant. Even in Sydney it was his 97 that pushed Aussies on the backfoot and allowed us to draw.

No that is completely wrong, it was Pujara who was the rock for India drawing the Sydney test and winning Gabba test. Yes Pujara had issues with Lyon but Pant or anyone would have done what they did if Pujara was not there.

Pujara should be dropped right away. Even after a 100+ opening wicket stand, he cannot capitalize. He is totally worthless. His scoring ability has plummeted to the point where he either blocks or gets out. Can't see how we can carry such a middle order from Test to Test. Surely, we can try some other players from domestic cricket. I don't see any reason to persist with a completely misfiring middle order.

#4 and #5 in particular are the best places to bat in a Test team and the consistent failures just cannot be justified. #3 is also a good place to bat when the openers have seen off the new ball, which Rohit and Rahul are doing in this series. So, really, there is just no excuse for these abject batting failures. No point in giving a long rope to these guys. The reason you stick with "experience" is to help bail the team out from sticky scenarios in critical games, but these 3 failed in the WTC, which was the most important Test match of recent times. So, what is the use of "experience"? Better to try out some new guys who might turn out to be future stars.

Remember, way back in the 1996 tour of England, we did a complete overhaul of the middle order by getting Ganguly and Dravid to replace failing "experienced" players like Manju. Both Dravid and Ganguly went on to have successful international careers. We have to do something on similar lines here.

I am a bit perplexed.

Rahane is the goat captain but he doesn't merit a starting spot as a batsman.

Pujara did well vs bounce but is useless vs spin and swing now. Although he played really ugly so he may not be effective Vs bounce either tbh.

Kohli well is the worst captain. If he resigns from captaincy he can focus on cricket and I believe that should propel him back up the rankings. However, from what I observed he doesn't look comfortable vs spin or even slight movement. So in conditions like England and n.z he really needs to fix his back foot issue. A great player like him can make these adjustments but I am afraid he has caught the rich man syndrome. Unlike Smith and root, I do not see that fire in kohli anymore.

Seems like this is going to be the Last Series or Last match for Pujara, he's a shredded old wolf now, Rahane plays only test these days, he might be around for some more time, Well Kohli, he's not going anywhere anytime soon.

Yes, Pujara is the weakest link. He will be cut off soon. Kohli is clearly done too but thanks to the 40 yesterday, he will cruise for the next few games unquestioned. Rahane is also horribly out of runs. He has the best opportunity to  do his usual once in 10 games big innings in this game. If he again falls for a low score, then he too is in trouble.
