For the bowling experts on ICF - how does a spinner make a ball drift and loop? ... And other questions

Some of you have explained the role of shine, seam and weather on swing bowling.  Now, moving on to spin bowling.

Ashwin was putting on a clinic in Chennai with drift and loop.  Legends are also written about Erapalli Prasanna who they said was a master at drift and loop.  So, how exactly does one get the ball to drift in the air?  And the looping?  It's falling at one angle right after the peak, but suddenly dips.  How do you do it?

Do both finger and wrist spinners do this?  Because I hear it mostly in the context of finger spinning offies?

I was a fast bowler cum batsman. You need a spinner to tell you about this.

@BacktoCricaddictOne thing important to understand is that drift requires mainly bowling against the wind. That is the most important part. Many spinners and greats like Warne always wanted to bowl from the end from which they can control and bowl the ball against the wind. Hence you see, just like fast bowlers, even spinners often change the end as the wind can continue to flow to certain direction.

Drifting is very different for a leg spinenr as it is for an off spinner. The technacalities include holding and gripping the ball firmly so you can create a loop when releasing it. How you spin the ball is different for every spinner. Even a 10 year old can spin more than Kumble.

The greats like Kumble sometimes intentionally don’t want too much drift or turn as that will force umpire to not give lbw and instead give decision in favor of a batsman. Though UDRS has changed this thing but it is still very much on the mind of a spinner.

Drift works but isn’t always the ideal thing for a spinner. They like their conventional spin off the pitch.

Drift really isn't the most important thing , loop in getting ball up and down and deceiving in length is mainly what spinners look for . This is achieved by rotation of hips and bowling over the front placing knee.

Variations to this are used , slightly slower, slightly quicker all depending how much a wicket maybe spinning .

That's why off spinners like left handers , they can bowl wider from the crease bowling around the wicket rotating the hips with a more side on action  which allows " us" to bowl into and spin  away .

How you hold it , wrist position is a whole different conversation

That was me 40 years ago.  Had no idea where to land the ball, how to control the spin or what else to do ... I would just be delighted that it would land and turn 45 deg!  Even if it was hit away for a boundary.

I think drift is very important in tests and more so when bowling against quality batsmen..

Okay you are entitled to your opinion but answer me one question ...when Bess and Ali got Kohli last two test was it drift that mainly got him or loop deceiving him with turn ?

might have been normal off spinners but you look at all top spinners.. the curve they get helps them a lot. Ashwin to Stokes was one example.

Drift depends on the revs a bowler imparts on the ball. It's the side ways movement of the ball that can at times be assisted by the breeze but not all the time. Good revs are important. Batsman thinks ball is coming straight to him but it slightly curves away or curves and  that leads to batsman misjudging the line. It works for both off and leg spinner.
