Looking forward to seeing Pujara in Eng

The 2018 series in Eng was like a turning point in Pujara's career where he took his performances "overseas" to new heights:

The above #s tell that as a top order batsman (#1-3), he was in a league of his own in that series ... Averaged 40, when average sans him is 22 (so Pujara is +82%) ... as for the # of balls faced, it is 726 in 7 (ignoring the not out for avg) so the avg is over 100 (avg sans him is 37 balls, Pujara is 280%+ than that avg) ... since then he has had 2 memorable back to back series in Aus and also did relatively well in NZ as a top order batsman in tough conditions (got out mostly to good balls) 

 

Every batsman goes through ups and downs, the greatness of Pujara is that even when he is not at his best, he can make an impact. When at his best, he is a different beast.  If he is close to his best, I hope he has another memorable series esp. if the conditions are tougher:

Oh great, statsguru is back! I can see the date filters to skip earlier years and #4 batting position being skipped since Kohli scored some. What an achievement to beat Dhawan & Rahul in Eng tests!

 

Can he 'step up' to the level of higher targets

If the pitches are better he will score more, if they're closer to 2018 tracks & we bat last nearly every time then I doubt Pujara can score even a single hundred there!

He seems to either leave or block with the bat or body. Hope he gets any other  scoring shot than the edges between slips. Also remember he can’t run because of his knees, so it becomes even more difficult for him to keep score board ticking.

 

May be he will surprise us this IPL.

Generally speaking, I'm not anti-Pujara or anything, he holds his place in the squad given what we got. He's not as good as Dravid as some like to claim and I don't see him scoring what Dravid did in the 2011 tour.

Dravid was defensive but he had all the shots. Both him and VVS were slow between wickets by modern standards but could rotate strike and pick their spots  at least RD later on. Initially he used to hit those crisp drives straight to fielders.

 

Pujara unfortunately has become very one dimensional. Early on he used to smash spinners or pick his bowlers, now all he does is block and lunge with no intent almost like a test version of MSD in his later years. It works for us because our opening overseas struggles and middle order is hit or miss so it comes across as a fighting effort.  We see it many times, top order collapses,Pujara survives, middle order gets some momentum, then suddenly there is a lower order collapse and we end up with a sub par target because Pujara ends up with 27(185) type knocks.

along with 1-2 wickets on a good day and improve the fielding dramatically.

Pujara is the first pick in the 11 ... SDP plays in the lower middle order ... they do not compete ... test 11 needs all type of players

 

 if a batsman can play 189 balls, when others avg a mere 37 balls in the top order, serving as a virtual opener, holding an end up, tiring and driving confidence out of bowlers, playing with the lower MO and tail,  that is gold ... Ind has never had a batsman in tests like Pujara since 1990

We would not have beaten Aus without Pujara. He was solid as a rock and defended everything that was thrown at him. Took body blows as well. Blunting the attack is as good as scoring runs as it gives the opportunity for others to score and build partnerships. I would  take 50 off 150 every time if the others capitalise. He cannot de dropped overseas. 

 

Not sure about his Home performances where aggression is required every now and then.

Pujara s best knock as per me in trying conditions has been the Southampton one where he shepherded the tail. It was a fantastic innings on a trying pitch. Sad We couldnt win that match
