Is Iyer in T20s a right pick?

Is Iyer a good pick for T20s (not necessarily ODIs) over SKY or Samson from a relatively long term perspective.

This is not a ICF’s daily player stock price thread where last failure can equal a player needing to retires and the last success can mean cementing his place.

Yes, Iyer did well in the first T20 b Eng and has a few upsides too. But Ind tends to unnecessarily squeeze in relatively non T20ish players (Manish Pandey for e.g. Maybe even Jadeja) over those more suitable for the format. Therefore, the discussion is from a relatively long term perspective esp. considering the upcoming T20 WC.

Look at this way

  • Dhawan, iyer, manish are good batsman but they are suited if u wanna play 160-180 kind of total game , might seems better in collapses situation
  • Rahul, Pandya, pant, kishen, samson, sky will look better in 180 + games

As i said depends which game a team wants to play. England have decided their game so they dnt go with root who also bowls btw

Iyer should be a back up for Kohli at 3. He is not a 5-6 player. If Kohli has to sit out, Iyer comes in else sits out. Sky,Pandya type players are high risk as we need a proper no.3 in any form of cricket.

Rahul if he is in form also should be backup no.3 or opener.

Wo no.3 ka bhi player nahin hai.....he aint a t20 player. Here he skipped hard length in 1st game coz bowlers dnt get enough overs at a player but in 50 over format they can bowl longer spels

Backup of Kohli at 3 shud actually be Rohit in t20 and then u can also look at samson, kishen, pant and gill in ODI

This is exactly it. Rohit and Kohli are backup to each other in terms of captaincy/anchoring in T20s.

Samson is not ODI material. Too inconsistent for 50 overs game.
