Select your XI for first test against England, no matter how unrealistic it is

Trent Bridge Aug 4th

Obviously guys like Kohli, Pujara, Bumrah etc are undroppable. Still give a fantasy XI.

Assume it is a typical English track but with good weather for all 5 days scheduled. Same batch of Dukes we used in this WTC F.

Sundar (as specialist batsman)

Rohit (vc)

Jaddu (instead of Che)

Kohli

Rahane (captain)

Pant (wk)

Shankar

Ashwin

Thakur

Siraj

Shami

L-R combo till #6, 3 LHBs in top 6 like this NZ side

Siraj, Thakur, Shami pace options

Shankar as #7 and for his dibbly-dobblies

Ashwin, Jaddu both available for spin....don't need to use Sundar

No compulsive blocker in the top 6

Thakur at #9, so enough batting depth...even Siraj/Shami have bat swing to land a few blows

Kohli not the captain, let him focus on his batting

Siraj

I usually only trust a good leg spinner (like Warne)  or a mystery spinner (like Chandra) in SENA

Pandya in place of Shankar at #7 for me if he can bowl 10 overs per innings. Forgot about him.

If Bhuvi can bowl 12-15 overs a day he can be anyday better than pandya & shankar. Need to play 3 pacers with bhuvi as bowling all rounder. Also want gill as opener or #3.

DK was made makeshift opener in 2006-07, and did very well in that 2007 Eng series which was the last time we beat them away. Was top scorer from India. Want to explore Washi as opening option for the novelty factor.

Pick only Rahane purely because he led us to a series win in Aus. Rest the three senior seamers. Send Kohli and Shastri and the puppet coaches back to India right away

Rohit

Sundar

Gill

Mayank

Rahane (c)

Pant

Ashwin

Thakur

Deepak Chahar

Siraj

Avesh/Prasidh

At worst, we will lose 5-0, score 150-175,  with the seniors it will be no different. Better to build the team for the future with the aim of retiring Rahane and Rohit in the next 6-8 months.

Star sports may not allow us to field this team though

  1. Easwaran
  2. Rohit
  3. Rahane (c)
  4. Kohli
  5. Gill
  6. Shankar
  7. Pant
  8. Ashwin (VC)
  9. Shardul/Deepak Chahar (if bumrah's form stays like this )
  10. Siraj
  11. Ishant

  • Sos Deepak chahar n Shankar
  • Dropping bumrah- was also thinking for this game to
  • Hard to drop jaddu but i rate shankar the batsman very very highly. Neways ashwin fitness on long tour starts to decline so jaddu can come in then

While Rahane as a person has my respect, a team picks itself first and then the captain. Apart from the MCG knock where he received multiple chances, he has pretty much sucked in the other games. I know Pujara is the latest punching bag and rightfully so but Pujara is behind Rahane in the pecking order for getting the axe.

I know its fantasy land selections here, but also realistically the players I listed can all play, given they are in the squad.

This is how I would look at rebuilding the Indian Cricket Test side.

Mayank

Hitman

Gill

Rahane (Captain)

KL

Pant

Thakur

Sundar/Ash/Jaddu/Axar

Siraj

Shami

Prasidh Krishna

Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Mayank Agarwal, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli (Captain), Ajinkya Rahane (vice-captain), Hanuma Vihari, Rishabh Pant (wicket-keeper), R. Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma, Mohd. Shami, Md. Siraj, Shardul Thakur, Umesh Yadav, KL Rahul (subject to fitness clearance), Wriddhiman Saha (wicket-keeper; subject to fitness clearance).

Standby players: Abhimanyu Easwaran, Prasidh Krishna, Avesh Khan, Arzan Nagwaswalla

I would rather and underperforming Rahane as captain than Kohli.

At least he has an approach to Test captaincy where he encourages his players to be the best player that they can be and confident too.

Forgot about Pandya too, I agree 10 -15 overs from him would be plenty.

Should move on from Pujara, Rahane & Ishant. The WTC crap is over, let's begin afresh. In absence of a quality seam allrounder, India need to rotate their fast bowlers in the five match series like Aus did in the Ashes 2019. The likes of Shaw & Gill should be a fixture now, what worse they can do then the "settled" middle order.

PS : Fans making Rahane the captain, bhai bhagwan se tou daro kam se kam, this guy is a leech of the highest order, still investing in him is insane
