Need to BCCI some sport like Boxing, wrestling and Hockey where we were robbed by officials. Build some rept and clout

i think this has been better simply because of the hockey teams. team sports if invested in can be perennial medal contenders for decades. same can't be said with individuals (unless there is a system which churns them out like chinese tt or korean archery). the only such system that exists in india is wrestling.

hockey can be. if it get's eyeballs, not only will the increased money lead to more power but better infrastructure and players as well.

They have always dominated long distance running. They do jack in anything else. 

 

We have lots to feel happy about this time. Lots of potential contenders in multiple sports which imo has never happened earlier. In 2012 the shooting contingent sprung a silver out of nowhere in Vijay Singh. Gagan Narang was expected. Sushil kumars bronze was unexpected. Vijender singhs bronze was unexpected.. We had good prospects like Vikas Krishan who were robbed. 

 

This time we had multiple contenders going into multiple events. I don't remember an Olympic Games when Indians have participated by qualification everyday. Yes a lot of them disappointed but it bodes well.

India - participation at the Olympics - a trend

 

2008 -  48 Events in 12 sports - Other than tennis and perhaps Sania for Badminton I don't remember anyone being talked about as potential winners at all. 

2012 - 54 Events in 13 sports - Again very few contenders other than Boxing and Wrestling. Sushil Kumar was expected to win gold - but unfortunately came up short with a silver

2016 - 64 Events in 15 sports - We had perhaps 10 contenders in Shooting, Tennis, Boxing and Wrestling. Sindhu and Saskshi came out of nowhere to win their medals. We had almost 3 more medals with 4th place finishes in Shooting (Bindra), Tennis (Sania and Paes) and Gymnastics (Dipa Karmakar)

2021 - 69 Events in 18 sports * Including 4 swimming, 3 sailing, 1 rowing, 1 fencing, 1 judo, 14 Athletics, 2 Golf where didn't stand a chance...  In almost 40 events we had contenders for medals going into the Games. this is a huge improvement

 

We have come a huge way from 2008. We don't have that elusive gold yet - but I am sure the next batch in Paris will clinch the deal. Lot to be hopeful for.

yeah the reason you are not seeing the golds is because the growth is broad rather than deep. we have become good in lots of sports without becoming great.

 

smaller countries specialize. thats why we beat them big time in cwg, asian etc.

 

i think in the coming decade a few of our "good" sports will become "great" and then medals will jump out at once.

 

we are kind of where korea was in the late 70s.

I think Indian athletes should be shown Indian (135 cr population 0 gold) vs australia tally 2 cr population, 17 golds...

 

After seeing this they will realise Even if Indian athletes win a gold, it's just 1 gold :p 

 

maybe a way to relieve some pressure :D

Before Olympics I think not many people would know we are world class at so many sports.

We have Boxing world championship winner, Wrestling world champion winners in their categories.

Then women Badminton world champion Sindhu.

No. 1 ranked Shooters in 6 diff range and categories.

Top ranked Archers.

Hockey team in top 5 in the world.

 

I don't think we are poor in sports anymore. Average at worst.
