Is Chaminda Vaas the most successful trundler in the HISTORY of modern cricket ? 400 ODI wickets + 355 Test wickets

Vaas was as trundler as they come pace wise and lacked the height or action to extract much bounce.

His rare "fast" deliveries would barely cross 130 kmph, else his pace was always in the 120s.

Our much maligned trundlers actually bowl in the 130s with much less success.

Have never seen such a "slow" fast bowler so successful.

He had superb control though - and could bring it back to the right handers and made it very difficult to cut.

He had good success against our team in ODIS until the below phenomenon came to light...

Very intelligent bowler. Fiz of yesteryears. Especially when Tendulkar in  prime. Often Tendulkar got the best of him. But at times he was able to have his number. Mostly by slanting across consistently on a length until Tendulkar losing his patience and edging one to slips. He has dismissed Sachin the highest number of times along with Brett Lee/Pollock. 9 times.

Fiz would do well to achieve even 50% of vaas unarguably the second greatest left armer from Asia probably in world as well, guy had not just great control over line and length, but also ability to maintain it for consistent amount of time, still remember him defending 7 runs against Symonds of all people ,guy could move ball both ways, had an exceptional slower ball Plus a very good yorker ,if their was one bowler i feared when we played lanka in mid 90's early 00's it was vaas and offcourse Nuwan zoysa

I feared Nuwan Zoysa a lot.

Vaas would torture Indians in the 90s.

Magical era tho.

Was a very intelligent bowler. Could swing the ball well, knew the lengths too well. Being a left arm bowler, added to his armoury. I think we shouldnt demean him by calling him a trundler. He deserves respect as he truly was only behind Wasim Akram, when it came to left arm fast bowlers.

And dont forget he was a handy late, order bat plus damn good fielder ,id take vaas over bhuvi+ chahar+thakur any day

Bhuvi cannot tie shoelaces of chaminda vaas. Vaas was one of those trundlers who I used to love to watch bowl. One of the greats. :hatsoff:

Vaas is better than Zak, Bhuvi is a poor man's both.

Very very good bowler, especially in ODIs with the new bowl. If my memory serves right, Sehwag has gotten out cheaply to Vaas multiple times too. So, that video is a bit misleading.

Anyways, also remember, Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad are also trundlers. Kapil Dev was a trundler too.

My answer would be James Anderson on topic though.

Yes Vaas was brilliant. Great accuracy, swing and off-cutters. Lovely action also.

Anderson and to some extent broad was not trundler. Even at later stage when they started trundling still bowl faster than our Bonafide trundlers.

Thanks for the Sehwag Video, when I watch one video of Sehwag I just can’t stop without watching those two brilliant knocks in Aus.
Poora 15 20 min lag jaata hai.
Cut From a different cloth,  stuck to his own style of play despite all the criticism.

Do we consider Shaun Pollock a trundler? (I know he started with some pace but later on was a trundler for sure)
Vernon Philander?
I think Philander was better in test cricket or maybe at par.
Also do we consider Dev a trundler? I don’t  but still.

Pollock,Mcgrath were trundlers but tall. So height helped them.

Philander was green track bully

Then it will be Kapil Dev. If he doesn't qualify, then probably Vernon Philander. He really looked an awful trundler when he played in Asia so much so that Faf stopped bowling him, hence he saved his stats there.

Pollock was fast in first half. He definitely doesn't qualify.

If we go into history, then Sydney Barnes and Alan Davidson can't be forgotten.

Actually, before Dennis Lillee, everyone was mostly a trundler except a few like Harold Larwood. So, makes sense to only count from 1970 onwards.
