What is so special about Shaheen Afridi's 1st over?

Shaheen Shah Afridi's first over seems to be an event. Most often than not he picks up wicket in 1st over and pegs the opposition back. We have seen that regularly in T20 world cup. In that India game he got Rohit in 1st over and India could never really recover back. He is doing the same against Aussies in the ongoing series where he is picking wickets for fun with new ball in flattest of pitches.

 

So what is he doing so well with new ball that batsmen around the world are struggling?

 

What can other bowlers learn from him?

 

Most importantly, how to survive his first over if you are a batsman?

Irfan pathan in his early days used to do the same. Any left arm swing bowler who can swing the ball back into the right hander at pace, is more likely to get wicket in his first over.

pray. he is the best since wasim. wait for him to get tired. he is like god in the first spell.

He knows he is at his best when the ball is new and makes the most of it. Goes all out with the brand new ball to strike. He is clearly very skillfull but the batting is usually very suspect nowadays if the balls are in testing areas.

 

Its unfortunate us Indian cricket fans have been seeing our bowlers esp Bumrah and Bhuvi more interested in bowling containing lengths rather than attacking ones with the new white ball.

I think he bowls full with new ball and this gives him good results.

 

Left arm angle, wrist position, and height makes him effective in this regard.

Simple formula

 

Accuracy+Movement+Pace, each element is at least good.

 

He's using the white new ball really well, not many bowlers use the thicker initial seam effectively

Full and straight at pace right at the batsman. Batsmen must premeditate that length, probably have a slightly open chested stance from ball 1, and hope for some luck aswell.

swinging the ball at high pace , pace +swing = deadly combo that to start of an inning to any batsman when they are most vunerable

He bowls really full with the new ball and swings it at over 140 kph . Thats as good as it gets with the white new cherry.

Did he bowl a knuckle ball yesterday? The ball is too high, almost a full toss but Travis reacted too quickly and played all around it.

He is the best in LOI for a reason. Best ever since wasim bhaiyaa.

swing, high release point, fuller lengths, pace. GOod combination if you get it right. If you are a good batsman you should be prepared and play accordingly.

potentially better than bottle tops wasim. latter was more skilled but shaheen has maximized his talent better so far
