India's batting future- Who needs to go and who needs to be in

Recommended Posts

ODI

Current status

Openers- Dhawan, Rohit

Backups- None

3-4-5- Kohli, Pant, Rahul

Backups- Iyer, Suryakumar

All-rounders- Pandya, Jadeja

Backups- None

Who needs to go- Dhawan

Who needs to come- Gill

We need backups for All-rounders. Axar seems like TM's favourite and is quite experienced, but I want Washi to be there. Ventakesh Iyer needs to get a look in against Zimbabwe.

Dhawan is more consistent than Ro-Ko but his overall game is not impressive. Either get Gill there promote Pant. Either way, Gill gets atleast one position in top four. Another option is to open with Washi, this way we can have a backup/replacement for Jadeja as well.

T20s

Current Status-

Openers- Rohit, Rahul

Backups- Ishan

3-4-5- Kohli, SKY, Pant

Backups- Iyer, Hooda

Finisher- DK

All-rounders : Pandya/Jadeja

Backups- Axar

Who can be tried- Krunal

Can't change much as WT20 is nearing. Ruturaj and Axar failed to grab their chances.

After WT20-

Who should go-

Rohit, Kohli, Jadeja

Ideally both, but atleast one of Ro-Ko must go. Ishan and Hooda will get a look in. We don't have a finisher of DK's quality but I want Samad to be tried. He is raw but we don't have many better options, if he fails, DK gets back.

Tests-

Current status

Openers- Rohit, Rahul

Backups- Gill

Middle order- Pujara, Kohli, Pant

Backups- Vihari, Bharat

Lower order- Iyer, Jadeja

Backups- Axar (Home)

Who needs to go- Vihari

Keep Pujara on bench for some time.

Who needs to come- Jaiswal, Gill, Sarfaraz

We have the problem of having many middle order batsmen batting at top. We need to get a bona fide opener immediately and send Rahul at Kohli's place. One of Pujara-Kohli can be benched for some time. Iyer will do well at home but are there options for SENA, don't think so, persist with him. Also, make Gill a permanent backup for middle over position, stop making an opener out of him even if he himself demands to be.

The selectors should draft Hooda,Sarfaraz Khan,Samson,Tewatia,SRK,Kuldeep Sen ,Venkatesh Iyer ,Kuldeep Yadav Tripathi,Sai Kishore, in the squad .instead of Axar,Iyer,Harshal.

The players chooses should be such that they can be threat to senior players ie Hooda and not like Axar  who can be replaced easily whenever Jadeja returns.

The new players should be backed and not treated as Hooda and Samson who are still dropped after scoring 106 and 74.

If Tripathi,Samson,Hooda,Venkatesh,Sarfaraz,Kuldeep Yadav would have been part of the squad it would have made the squad more strong.

The curios case is why some players are always dropped inspite of good perfomance and some manages to hold their places inspite of mediocre perfomances

It would be incredibly stupid if selectors repose faith in him if he performs in the West Indies. Windies are ODI minnows now. I'd take performances against BD and SL as more important.

To be fair Dhawan has been one of the best odi batsmen in ICC tournaments for India. But his time is over, just like Kohli's time is over. Teams have to move on that is why the moron who selected this guy needs to be sacked asap.

Surya is already 31 and will be 32 by this year end. We can't consider him as a backup in ODI as he don't have unfortunately many years left (4-5 max).
Hooda is 27 and he is starting his prime years, he should also be in consideration in both T20's and ODI's as he can also offer few overs of the ball (something which we lack).

In Tests -> I would like to see how Ruturaj performs, if has issues against swing but if he's able to negate it then can play at no 3 and Gill at no 4.

In T20's -> Tripathi and Samson should be given more chances after T20 WC (assuming Kohli and Rohit might not play post that).

Absolutely. Gun player between  2013-2019. No question about that.

Dhawan needs to be forcefully retired. Can't make the Dhoni mistake with him. He looked absolutely clueless and he'll be almost 38 by the next World Cup.

Yet he remains, he is a constant along with Kohli.

India go into every ODI, handicapped with 2 wickets for very little and a reduced run rate.

Is his recent record in ODI bad?

Or are you just saying this on basis of just one ODI?

Modern era batters are evolving pretty rapidly with the influence of T20 cricket and this has an impact on how the ODI cricket is being played today. Dhawan might find it hard to keep up with that in ODIs. He seems to be a guy who on his good days is scoring 60-70 at 90 strike rate and on bad days getting out cheaply. The question is whether that 60-70 is helping the team and is good enough for a place in XI?
