Lord
brave. If Pak chase 343, they deserve to win. Our TM can never think like that. Link to comment

MechEng
Superb declaration. England knew well that had they chose to bowl tomorrow, Pakistan would have shut the shop and played for a draw. They declared early enough to force Pakistan to play attacking cricket, which may increase the chances of them getting wickets. Win or lose, amazing mindset from Brits here! Vijy
it is not a smart decision right now, but could prove to be a great one in hindsight. match is evenly poised as of now, pak slightly ahead. Lord 1 Link to comment

Contrast that with us ,the reason we dont produce pace bowlers is because we are too pragmatic .In domestic cricket the thing to do is to bowl according to the conditions and just bowl slowly and dont allow the batsman to time the ball ,but one cant develop with such a smart approach. It's different for tests, you can't just strike your way out of trouble every time! You think we chased so many totals at home, from mid 2k - early 2010's just because of Sehwag or VVS? The pitches were super flat & we had no DRS back then, on helpful surfaces you must have a game to keep the good balls away, or to leave them otherwise you end up like Engurland last year Opposition team India Home or away away (home of opposition) Start of match date between 1 Jan 2020 and 1 Jun 2021 Totals in terms of batting team Qualifications team score less than or equal to 200 Ordered by team score (descending) Page 1 of 1 Showing 1 - 6 of 6 First Previous Next Last Return to query menuCleared query menu Innings by innings list Team Score Overs RPO Lead Inns Result Opposition Ground Start Date England 178 46.3 3.82 419 3 won v India Chennai 5 Feb 2021 England 164 54.2 3.01 -317 4 lost v India Chennai 13 Feb 2021 England 135 54.5 2.46 -25 3 lost v India Ahmedabad 4 Mar 2021 England 134 59.5 2.23 -195 2 lost v India Chennai 13 Feb 2021 England 112 48.4 2.30 112 1 lost v India Ahmedabad 24 Feb 2021 England 81 30.4 2.64 48 3 lost v India Ahmedabad 24 Feb 2021 Vijy 1 Link to comment

Yes but not everyone's gonna provide them with Pak like roads, or sh!t Dukes balls that need to be changed 5 times a day, so the odds of them pulling this through against better teams are dubiously slim. Moreover when you start playing this style you lose the ability/patience to survive good balls/spells longer term, this is what happened to Sehwag in his latter years when he started playing T20 like in tests! Post 2007/08 Oz tour he has a ridiculous S/R in tests, IIRC close to 100 right till his slump in mid 2011 against Eng. He never recovered after that even at home. You might argue it had something to do with his age as well but IMO the T20's & overaggressive approach hastened his demise. zen
Gone with “smart” as Eng is probably looking to remove draws out of its games. It wants to win even at a risk of losing, a mindset/approach that would work well in the long term. Vijy 1 Link to comment
khadekhademaaro
Very smart. They have nothing to lose in the WTC. A loss here would not hurt when you are pushing for a win. England have challenged the benign conditions to push for a result. Massive respect and an awesome approach to the game. Stokes is a once in a generation cricketer !! Norman 1 Link to comment
ThirtyD.
They’re trying to promote a certain brand of cricket, so at times they may look foolish but at least it’s an attempt. Also, this way they’re putting their mouths where the money is. It is very unlike Indian cricket who have no *ing idea what they’re going to do in the next game forget next years World Cup. This current team and its setup is so difficult follow and like. Vickydev 1 Link to comment
zen
Eng asks itself that from this position how to win the game. If a risky declaration is the answer, so be it! Vijy 1 Link to comment
