Who drops out when Rohit comes back?

Once Rohit is back someone will have to drop out. Kohli is undroppable and while it obviously should be KL Rahul, the brain-dead team management has made him VC so won't be dropped. Pujara has scored a century and 50 and made himself undroppable till the Australia tests.

So the only candidates are Iyer and Gill both of whom got runs this test. Who will be dropped in favour of the senior player?

Gill will be dropped. I guess you aren't following Indian cricket much. I would be surprised if Rahul is dropped.

Considering that the next test series is Australia, there is a case for Iyer too although if he performs in next game, he definitely deserves to start there.

Of course Gill looks likely...but they'll have little justification to do that if he scores heavily in the second test as well.

 Rahul will be on honeymoon break after his marriage whole January. I suspect he will get injured or fake injury and return in IPL only.

Don't see rohit coming back in the 2nd test.  No way his finger would recover so quickly. Pot belly also requires longer rest.  He is likely to return against SL at home. (Jan 2023).

Even if he scores a 300+ next match.

The only way to remove KLPD is if Gavaskar decides to make a comeback.

 

Then KLPD will get a stiff back based on Seniors first policy.

If Shreyas can't handle the short stuff that the Aussies will dish out to him, then why does he deserve to start ?

He will be effective vs off spin of Lyon who will definitely have a plan vs Pant.

 

Iyer will get a start due to performance in this series.

Performances should count only if a player has the requisite game for the given conditions or the opposition he is about to face.

Well, if you don't want to play him at home vs Australia even in first game inspite of performance then why really persisting with him at 5 against other teams? Better try other options.

 

Personally, I feel India should use one of Gill or KLR at 5.

I don't see the point of playing batters with major issues, till the time they sort it out.

 

It is better to play Gill at 5 than drop him.
