I am not sure if the batsman was thinking about golden ducks (that is probably for the nerds/arm chair experts to speculate). SKY, who is a busy and confident batsman (not every batsman plays in the same manner), saw the ball was slightly short so he instinctively tried to place it in a gap. The ball turned more and even stayed lower than he expected iirc. Don’t forget he is said to be one of the better players of spin. If we want to talk about game awareness when a batsman gets out, then every time any (or most) batsman gets out, it can be mentioned. Why did batsman X play the Y shot at point Z, when he could have hit a 6 with shot Y before. When a batsman is going for runs, he is not thinking about getting out. It is that the execution, where if the ball hits an edge, the ball could go somewhere else. If it hits the middle, it can go for a 6. If cricket was designed to be perfect, a bowler would bowl a perfect ball, the batsman offer a perfect shot, and the fielder make a perfect stop. And nothing much would happen. It is the imperfections that make a sport interesting (As fans, we may want our team to play perfect cricket with everything that can go wrong happening to the other team, but that is not how real world works. Usually, both teams will have ups and downs in a game). For me this hat trick of golden ducks is a rare event esp. knowing the skills of SKY over the years. nevada Posted March 22, 2023 Posted March 22, 2023 The golden ducks aren't the end of the world, but SKY didn't look very convincing in ODIS even prior to this. Batting for 35-40 overs seems like too much for him, he looks like would rather bat for just 10-15. There's nothing wrong with that. This guy is a late bloomer and has moulded his game to maximize his returns in the T20 format. Other formats are probably not for him. Number and Suhaan 2
Texan Posted March 22, 2023 Posted March 22, 2023 If I had been selected, I could have at least matched SKY's batting performance in this series, if not done a little better.

But that's what the TM tried in this game by having him bat lower down the order. TM also felt he should be a Test player for India based on T20 performances and ignored legitimate claims from Sarfaraz Khan for a Test spot.

Vijy Posted March 22, 2023 Posted March 22, 2023 he is looking increasingly like an asif ali level player in ODIs (not talking about T20s here). Frustrated 1
Suhaan Posted March 22, 2023 Posted March 22, 2023 When we have pussies at the top, guys like SKY look overly agressive, careless what not Rohit's 15 ball 30s are a welcome change though, hope someone scores big with healthy rate too

For me this hat trick of golden ducks is a rare event esp. knowing the skills of SKY over the years. looking at the ball and going for a shot on the very first ball irrespective of the situation is T20 game. In ODI when you have just one more recognized batter, you take the game deep, try to play yourself in, adjust to the bounce of pitch. Total lack of awareness of the ODI game. Everyone on this forum including you are armchair experts, since the topic is game awareness, the players state of mind is something one needs to speculate about. The couple of ducks or even three ducks isn't to say SKY isn't a good batter, but it does say he is having a problem. In ODI the obvious solution to the problem is spend time in the middle. Yes three consecutive ducks are rare, but just because its rare it doesn't mean it didn't happen for a reason. The reason is total lack of awareness, everyone knows Starc would try to bing the ball back in, yet he repeated same mistake as the first game. Going by your logic, 10 consecutive ducks are also rare, so if SKY does that we shouldn't criticize him because its rare. Lord, Frustrated, Trichromatic and 1 other 4
putrevus Posted March 22, 2023 Posted March 22, 2023 (edited) For some it always the players who are sitting out are Bradmans and the players who are playing are only due to TM or nepotism SKY can be best player in t20 but suddenly he become more useless playing 50 over game. To me he has not found his bearings yet, give him time. He will win us important matches. Edited March 22, 2023 by putrevus Lord 1

It is that the execution, where if the ball hits an edge, the ball could go somewhere else. If it hits the middle, it can go for a 6." People know that SKY plays his cricket differently. And one of the reasons, he is brought in the ODI set up. Many people will even say that the best way to bat is to play the ball not the situation. He is a batsman who is usually looking to place the ball in the gap (plays 360 degrees cricket too to target gaps). If a batsman can say hit the first ball in T20s successfully, it does not mean he cannot do that in ODIs and will get out on the first ball. The more significant issue for me in the 3rd ODI is him being sent lower down the order when he could have been sent it at #3-4. Quote Yes three consecutive ducks are rare, but just because its rare it doesn't mean it didn't happen for a reason. And we are not talking about a has-been batsman or tailender but a batsman who has had a good last few months. If he were in bad form (which 10 consecutive ducks could show depending upon how he is getting out), had major issues with certain types of bowling, etc., it is understandable. For e.g. batsmen who get out to left-arm pacers, off-spinners, etc. He is not even a batsman who would waste balls or look to the stats pad. Edited March 22, 2023 by zen
jalebi_bhai Posted March 22, 2023 Posted March 22, 2023 He lacks proper gears to pace an ODI innings. It's either 6th gear or no gear. I personally don't blame him. This asinine TM are hell-bent on making format specialists into all format players. nevada and rollingstoned 2
zen Posted March 23, 2023 Author Posted March 23, 2023 (edited) Btw besides SKY, talking about key batsmen, Tendulkar scored 3 ducks in a row in 1994 spread across 2 series. v SL at Colombo (2 balls) v WI at Faridabad (4 balls) v WI at Mumbai (4 balls) PS Bowlers like Kumble, Zak, Ishant, & Bumrah have scored 3 ducks in a row as well. It would have been interesting to watch how Sarfraz bats against spin on dust bowls. But we have to persist with oldies no matter what and don't even pick him in the squad. At-least Patidar did slightly better- picked in the ODI squad for 1-2 series and quietly discarded, perhaps forever.

He is legtimate batsman, no batsman worth his soul would like to bat below a number 9 like Axar. What Dravid did was idiotic, he ruined Rahul and SKY by one move yesterday. Rahul is number 5 leave him there, SKY is number 4 , if he does not cut he should be gone from the side. No soft landing for international players. Edited March 23, 2023 by putrevus
