Should MSD do a Bob Simpson/ Mike Brearly to save Indian cricket?

Recommended Posts

In 1977/ 1978 Australia had a crisis due to World Series cricket and retirements of various players. So they brought back Bobby Simpson who retired a few years ago purely as a specialist captain. However Robert apparently played some gritty knocks (like MSD). His captaincy to a small extent along with the Australian umpiring said to be worse than Shakoor Rana umpiring on August 14th kept India from winning the series. India lost 3-2.

Also Mike Brearly who used to be a a specialist captain is a good case study. MSD can still keep (at least to spinners) and take DRS.

The reason for this thought is we seem to be having a serious leadership crisis. Kohli apart from his own stuff batting/ fielding looks totally zoned out. Rohit seems to be treating this like gully cricket games and Dravid doesn’t have a plan or a clue. Less said the better about the remaining coaching staff. I don’t think I have got the answer for the question who is our fielding  coach which I asked a while back?

MSD can coach everyone in batting, fielding and bowling with post game advice. As player/mentor/ coach he will have total control. As mentor alone he won’t be able to take DRS or tell the clueless trundler/ darter where to pitch the ball.

Smart move from BCCI to make Dhoni play 1 more year. It’s a back up move because if we lose the World Cup at home this year, a lot of folk will stop giving a f about IPL.

Instead of thinking small, BCCI should just make MSD do a Simpson/ Brearly and play the World Cup.

Purely speculation but if IPL is scripted,  I mean what better script than MSD coming back and defending  the World Cup with the boisterous voice of Ravi Shastri screaming “Dhoni finishes off in style/ once again”. This would do off the chart numbers on Jio/ Star. With the $$$$ratings this will bring in  how difficult it will be to convince teams from Asia, North America, Europe, Oceania/Australia,Africa  and Pakistan to hop on board?

I think this needs to happen to save Indian cricket. Once we lose the WC and after next to next season when MSD’s knees and fingers stop holding up or people just get tired of this nautanki, there is no future for Indian cricket.

This is needed right now. Your views :)

T20 is just 20 overs. 50 over format will be too tiring for Dhoni and he can't escape batting duty like he does in the shortest format. The selectors already tried to rub some Dhoni magic dust by appointing him as mentor for the T20 WC but we know how it turned out. He is good enough for IPL but that's it, international cricket is too much for him. Despite having exciting new talent available, we are about to commit harakiri with oldies in one more WC. That is the crux of the problem. Start rebuilding the team and we will do just fine.

The issue here is Indian batting has a SERIOUS issue with Left Hand fast bowlers that is still not being addressed even after we got exposed with both Kohli and Rohit Captaincy.

Even appointing Dhoni as mentor didn't help precisely because of India faltering against even Sri Lankan, Bangladeshi left arm fast bowlers. Not even NZ, Aus, Pak etc.

I have no idea if Dhoni would solve that but if this issue is not sorted soon, even upcoming WC will be a massive problem.

MSD is a poor captain in tests. he never quite cared about the format. however, even as a non-playing captain, he could be useful in ODI WC

What is really needed is a ruthless selector that selects players based on form, ability and performing in big WC matches against superior opposition.

There is no accountability in Indian Cricket for poor selections.

We tried that in Wt20 2021 as mentor. Failed badly.

He's overrated

You can’t do lightning stumpings,DRS and point to bowlers on what part of the pitch to hit as a mentor/coach alone. That’s why the suggestion as playing captain/coach
