Batting was shambles today; you should ask Kohli what shot he played: Sunil Gavaskar tears into India batters after WTC final failure

" You have not even lasted a session. 8 wickets have not lasted a session?," Gavaskar tears into India's batting lineup.

Sunil Gavaskar slamming the Indian batters after they went down by 209 runs to Australia, leading to the Baggy Greens claiming their first World Test Championship title.

“The batting was shambles today. It was just ridiculous what we saw today. Especially the shot making. We saw some ordinary shots yesterday from Pujara, somebody you never expect to play that shot. Maybe somebody has gone into his head and said ‘strike rate, strike rate’. You have not even lasted a session. 8 wickets have not lasted a session? C’mon,” Gavaskar said while talking to Star Sports.

Talking about Virat Kohli’s dismissal, he said, ‘ It was a pretty ordinary shot. Outside the off stump. He was leaving till then. Maybe he was conscious that he needed one run to reach his half century. It happens when you are nearing a milestone. It happened to Jadeja. He played a delivery he shouldn’t have when he was 48. Happened to Ajinkya Rahane who was on 46. He hadn’t played that shot all this while. Suddenly why do you play that shot? Because you are aware of that landmark,” he added.

Tearing into Kohli further, he said, “It was a bad shot. You should ask Kohli what shot he played. He talks so much about how to win a match you need a long innings. How are you going to do that if you play a ball so far outside the offstump?”

“I do believe that batters when they know they are near a landmark tend to try and do something to get to their landmark so we saw that in the first innings with Jadeja he was batting so well on 48 and he pushed his bat out when he thought he could run the ball down he was caught in the slips if he was not on 48 he might not even played that ball he might have left it. And we saw Kohli chase a delivery outside the off-stump He showed so much discipline then he thought oh! 1 run can get to another half-century landmarks mile stones you chose the wrong balls to play the wrong shots because you want to get there. It happens so often,” the legend had earlier said on commentary.

Senile Bakwaskar in action. Did he miss out on Vada Pav Sharma's nothing shot which provided a foot in the door to the Aussies just after India recovered from Gilli-Danda's dismissal? Very interesting.

Convenient to rag on the players.

How about questioning the BCCI? Two months of intense t20 cricket with 7-8 days gap between IPL final and WTC final. The head honchos don't care.

As long as India makes semis, finals....IPL brand value remains intact. Only boycotting cricket will mend this. And that won't happen. This hell loop will continue till we fluke a tournament win.

Gill is part of the next gen. What did he do? I'm a huge fan of the kid, but what has he honestly done in Tests besides the Gabba innings? 2 hundreds on pattas.

We are pathetic at preparing for tournaments. Format doesn't matter. Often in life, it's not the most talented but the most prepared who succeed.

Why are we all surprised? We've been watching this for the last 10 years or so.

Exactly, this is not a surprise to us at all but ex India cricketers seem to have just woken up to the fact that the team should have started transitioning 3 years ago.

Management is still asleep at the wheel though.

Yes or else these mahapurushs would have chased 440 with ease.

It is not about chasing, but about playing sessions out to draw the game (and therefore win the title).

The batsmen were looking to create boundary opportunities and not being realistic.

If they got out trying to defend, you would be the first person to be all over them for tuk tuk approach and not learning from bazball.

But they are future, you cant spend time on sharma, chokli and pujara. Give Gill, Jaiswal and other youngsters also opportunities to fail , i am sure few of them come out as savior like Pant rather than loosing  tourney after tourney on the name of experience.
