BCCI outrightly rejects five of Gautam Gambhir's picks as coaching staff members, Morne Morkel latest casualty: Report

Gautam Gambhir has faced resistance from the BCCI in picking his support staff members. Five of his recommendations have been rejected so far.

Gautam Gambhir is having a hard time finalising his support staff. Unlike his predecessors, he has so far faced resistance from the BCCI for the majority of his preferences. Morne Morkel was reportedly the latest of his recommendations as the bowling coach to be turned down by the board.

Gambhir was keen on having the former South African speedster, who served as Pakistan's bowling coach during last year's ODI World Cup and is currently associated with IPL franchise Lucknow Super Giants in the same capacity, as part of his coaching staff. However, according to a report in The Economic Times, the BCCI has rejected Gambhir's proposal.

This was Gambhir's third pick as the bowling coach, which the BCCI rejected. The previous two were reportedly R Vinay Kumar and Laximipathy Balaji. The two former Indian quicks were not approved in the first round of discussions between the board and the new head coach of Team India.

Bowling coach is not the only discipline in which the board has rejected Gambhir's recommendations. Two of Gambhir's picks as the fielding coach—Ryan ten Doeschate and Jonty Rhodes—were also turned down.

Among Gambhir's preferences, only former India all-rounder Abhishek Nayar appears to be in favourable condition to join his support staff either as an assistant coach or a batting coach. Nothing has been finalised yet, but multiple media reports suggest that the former Mumbai cricketer, who has made a name for himself by transforming the careers of Dinesh Karthik and Shreyas Iyer, is likely to get the nod.

While there are no doubts about the individual capacity of the candidates rejected by the board, the only chord that binds them with Gambhir is the Kolkata Knight Riders. Gambhir either captained them or worked with them as a member of the coaching staff of KKR, and ten Doeschate's case, he did both.

Morkel, Balaji, and Vinay Kumar played three seasons each for KKR under Gambhir's captaincy. Nayar is the only one who didn't play under Gambhir in KKR but was the assistant coach of the franchise Gambhir mentored this year to the IPL title.

Changing stance of BCCI

Generally, the BCCI gives the head coach a free hand in selecting his support staff members. This has been followed for ages. During Greg Chappell and Gary Kirsten's time, they got away with using relatively lesser-known names in cricket like Ian Frazer and Paddy Upton as part of their support staff.

Not much changed during the period of Anil Kumble, Ravi Shastri, and Rahul Dravid. Shastri in fact paid no heed to the recommendations of then-Cricket Advisory Committee of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, and VVS Laxman and instead, went ahead with his choice of support staff members. Dravid also picked Paras Mhambrey and T Dilip as the bowling and fielding coach, respectively. He had worked with them at the NCA.

Then what changed during Gambhi's tenure? He was after all, handpicked by the board to succeed Dravid. The report in ET adds that this signals the change in the board's stance.

"One insider has suggested that this was one way in which BCCI was letting Gambhir know that although he was its choice for head coach, he was not going to be the one calling the shots. There was also a school of thought that suggested that this was only reflective of the change in the functioning of BCCI. Where previously decisions were taken largely by committee and consensus, it's an open secret that the power is now centred around few individuals," the report added.

With barely 10 days to go before Gambhir begins his coaching journey with Team India for the T20I series in Sri Lanka, the current NCA coaching staff will likely work as the former India opener's interim support staff until the board and Gambhir reach a consensus.

What is the point of making a character like Gambhir coach while clipping his wings or not allowing him to choose whom he wants to work with? How can one have issues with names like Morkel and Rhodes as fielding coach? Not good at all.

What the hell are they doing, if they wanted this guy to become head coach then he should be allowed to pick his own staff.

It is unfair to Gambhir that he does not get to work with his choice of coaches.Who is taking decisions as BCCI why can't they put their name to it.

Shah is getting too much involved in lot of affairs where he has no business, him announcing Rohit as captain when there was no need.

We don't need an idiot like Shah having too much power. What happened to to the committee which was formed to pick head coaches.

Was that committee formed to pick Gambhir? what is the reasoning given for not wanting to give Gambhir his choice of coaches by that CAC, why is BCCI giving out statements.

CAC is formed to pick Head coach and his stafff.Let them give their reasoning to press.

They allowed Dravid and Shastri to ignore CAC and pick who they wanted to work with. Not sure why they want to put a leash on Gambhir if they gave him the job.

Issue is it was allowed before, not that its stopped now.

All coaches should be picked on merit and not head coach favourites

They are setting up Gambhir to fail. If a coach can't have his support staff, and can't get the players he wants in the team, why even bother with  this charade of appointing him the coach? This is akin to hiring a new CEO or CTO but not allowing them to bring their own team, or people they trust. Another classic definition of BCCI cutting off its nose to spite its face. Just to put Gambhir in his place and show who's the boss, it's Indian cricket which will pay the price.

I can understand vetoing one odd coach, say Gambhir asked for a coach from Pak but to deny every request, including likes of Morne Morkel, Ryan Ten Doeschate, Jonty Rhodes, Vinay Kumar, Balaji etc. is frankly stupid. A coach would like to work with his coaching  team and folks he trusts. If you're going to meddle and micro-manage to such an extent, may as well not hire a coach and let Jay Shah decide on other things the same way he decided on Rohit being captain for the next 2 years.

If Gambhir can't even get his own staff, how the hell is he supposed to run things and discipline the team? Now everyone knows that Gambhir has no say and the players can just run off to BCCI and Jay Shah instead of following Gambhir's direction. Just as you think we turned a corner we see these type of stories and as an Indian cricket fan it's pretty sad as you know that things won't change. Disappointing and sad.

Like Bill Parcells once said If they want you to cook the dinner, at least they ought to let you shop for some of the groceries.

If I was Gambhir I would resign.

Think most of the names are baseless, every other day a new name is floated. Its just media doing table-top news yes there would be name discussed and the general direction what they need for these new coaches. Bcci  and team seems to be good with current fielding coach, nayar is all set for batting coaching, think its just bowling coach.

Fast bowling resources have depleted rather quickly and there is no road-map of who/what they want from new stock of Ind fast bowlers.

Previous TM inducted many pre kolhi-sastri era kind of bowlers who are largely RA/LA nothing bowlers. A massive downgrade from - Umesh, Ishant, Shami.

They kept picking Saini for A tour with no plans for upcoming bowlers or saini  himself.

doeschate, nayar and morkel were the names GG wanted but its hard to get foreign coaches to break their contract as they now are doing coaching jobs or consulting with other franchises and leagues.

They seem to have differed on quite a few issues. Making sky captain in T20s wasn't unanimous either, Agarkar and Gambhir were the only ones who wete against Pandya reportedly. Squad announcement for sl took 1 extra day because of these disagreements.

Who is captain or not was never a coach's pick, Selectors and bcci largely made their mind after the injury to Pandaya and fall-out in MI.

Balaji, Vinay kumar heard some where zaheer's name also came up, not sure who is asking or who is suggesting those names. Vinay Kumar has he ever been  a bowling coach ..?? is he with NCA or any Ipl franchises ???

Balaji  was with CSK ?

The problem with foreign coaches is how they would control these overly hyped superstars, Ind ex-player would understand this and may not say anything about certain things but its hard fr foreign coaches plus bcci has invested too much in developing highly qualified coaches in Ind. So they get some1 as head coach or director (a former star who understands the dynamics of ind cricket)who is respected and has  control the superstars and then have these guys/coaches to work under him

It looks like after they saw his #1 pick for bowling coach (Vinay Kumar) , they are rejecting all his picks. Beta, hum tumhein batayenge!

I would not put Vinay kumar down so easily.I don't know his coaching credentials but he sure is greatest fast bowler in Indian domestic cricket history.

Is there any better winner in domestic cricket than this guy. This guy won everything in domestic cricket as a captain.

Bharat Arun did not have great international career but he sure has been best fast bowling coach for India even if you take any outside coaches.
