Ultimate_Game Posted October 20, 2024 Posted October 20, 2024 Pretty poor all around but I find the 2nd collapse much worse. At least when we got out for 46, the pitch was seaming and the ball was doing everything. But in the 2nd innings we were 408/3 and everything going in our favor. To collapse from that situation was inexcusable. New guy, raki05, bowl_out and 4 others 1 1 5

Someone in thr management has to admit that this team has a collapse problem and work on it. Batsmen are not trusting their defense to see off tough situations, rather they start throwing their bat around for counter attack. express bowling, Vk1, Ultimate_Game and 2 others 1 1 3
jf1gp_1 Posted October 20, 2024 Posted October 20, 2024 we do collapse every now and then. it keeps us grounded. Also this test should remind everyone what happens when jade and Ashwin don't score. 1st test vs BD would have been exactly the same had those two not got runs. Dude collapsing below 50 is something even minnows don't do. Also let's be reminded of what youngsters like pant and Sarfraz also keep performing but oldies don't Rightarmfast and Ultimate_Game 1 1

Kohli, Rahul etc are not agressive batsmen but keep laying Eggs Blaming collapses on agressive bats is counter productive when seniors let us down again and again. Kohli for all his praise is averaging 34 for 5 years. Kl has been perpetual failures. Rohit cannot score even 50s. Our most agressive bats scored 150 and 99 and did their jobs Ultimate_Game 1

Rahul has played 50+ test and avg in low 30s. I personally have been rooting for Rahul since his first 100 in Australia but the guy will go down as wasted talent. Kohli and Rohit are past their prime we need to start rotating them. New guy, Vk1 and Ultimate_Game 1 2
coffee_rules Posted October 20, 2024 Posted October 20, 2024 This test is probably the worst https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/india-tour-of-south-africa-1996-97-62290/south-africa-vs-india-1st-test-63736/full-scorecard
Majestic Posted October 20, 2024 Posted October 20, 2024 It only exposes India's weakness vs moving new ball. In India, we play on most pitches where new ball doesn't swing a lot and you can play all the shots on the up itself while outside Asia, even surviving against new ball is a challenge for us. It looks all great when we are invincible at home but staying competitive in all conditions is a mandatory criteria to be regarded as an ATG team like Aussies and Windies were. Even South Africa under Smith stayed very competitive and think they were equally formidable in mid-90s too when Donald and Pollock combo formed. India need to work on their game vs swinging ball and learn to survive these conditions. Getting bundled out for low score is very embarrassing. Number and Vk1 2

Our most agressive bats scored 150 and 99 and did their jobs Not blaming anyone particularly in fact I am even more disappointed with senior players like Rohit, KL and Virat who have more often than not failed to perform. But you have to admit, in test cricket there are tough phases where you have to look to survive by defending. You can score quickly when you see off that phase. The way Rohit stepped out in the first innings when the ball was swining miles is a clear symptom of this problem.
Lord Posted October 20, 2024 Posted October 20, 2024 Yes, can't collapse twice This team has dangerous wont of trying to hit their way out of trouble. No one is ready to dig in and see off tough spells Number and rollingstoned 2

This is a flipside of having a great T20 team and is a more systemic issue. 2015-19 we had guys like Rahane, Vijay, Pujara, prime Kohli who could weather through tough sessions and get to a par-ish score. But we also kept losing in T20 WCs cause our batsmen couldn't make par scores. Now with all the focus on IPL etc, most of the batsmen are aggressive and that means we are not grinding it out and dropping tests (Hyderabad test India should have got 600 odd, here 160-170 odd). Flipside is we won a T20WC undefeated and look good for a few more. Babar Azam had the same issue. Good defensive batsman. Not at all a T20 player. Changed his game and lost that defensive technique.
