His average since 2020 is 32. That is not "thriving in this kind of situation". 

The evidence is of a player declining with age. 5 years is a long time. On top of this he has not been playing first class cricket and also missing big test series. Hoping for a resurrection is not a great strategy especially with so many domestic players good enough to get into the side.

If India is to do well 1st the openers need to do well so that Virat can come in when the ball is a bit older so for me Rohit is actually key, Jaiswal 1st tour so a bit unknown.

Basically for Virat from 2020 it has gone downhill.

 

For Rohit it has been 6 bad test matches this year (2 vs Bangladesh & 2 vs New Zealand & 2 vs SA) however wrong time to lose form due to age and fitness.

Which "big game" has he showed up for? 2015 WC SF? 2017 WC CT Final? 2019 WC SF? 2023 WC Final? Or the two WTC Finals? Or maybe even IPL playoffs where he averages in 20s with a SR of 120 odd!

 

Kohli's reputation is mostly built on chasing totals and piling runs in useless bilaterals on flat pitches. He hasn't done anything in key games. The fact is Kohli struggles bigger the stakes. I would be amazed if he manages to average even 30 in the series.

Correction: He has had 9 bad test matches this year.   You hv missed out the 5 match test series at home against Eng in which he had just one century and one fifty in the entire series.  Overall avg in that series: 34

Only thing that might work for him is if he does a pujara . Just defend defend and wear opposition out . Currently that’s the only role I see him in . He has done that against England in past.

You should check those numbers again. 2 centuries and 44 average (which is still ordinary for a home series, but not a failure)
