He is an ATG for me, but why retire before SCG match, is it some sort of revolt against Gambhir?

Anyways, our greatest test cricketer amongst those who debuted in this millennium.

An Indian great who took tons of wickets at Indian soil, but not quite an ATG, was not successful and was not a regular in playing eleven outside India.

Indian journalists are real dalle ! All of these Johns, Voheas, Majumdars are just PR machines of some players

Among high profile names, Ashwin and Jadeja are the softest targets in Indian cricket. This is why I differed with @Lord earlier once when he said Ashwin has PR.

If you look at SM, all discourse is dominated by Dhoni/Kohli/Rohit PR groups.

I only said as compared to Jadeja IIRC. No doubt RoKo has biggest PR including the arsehole in above tweet.

Where do you get this lahori logic.Jadeja was preferred more for his batting than his bowling.

Ashwin not getting selected outside India has nothing to do with his bowling.Team balance made Jadeja more important.

He is better spin bowler than any of your Pakistani spinners past or present.

I think him missing out on stand out performances in SENA was a big miss.

Most of good spinners managed to fluke at least 1 performance.

He had his opportunities.

But he played decent role in 2021 BGT win.

True Ashwin, I don't think he ever expected his dad would make a statement.

Maybe that's how Ashwin truly felt. Just that it gets weird when it's made public.

India has played on very fast bowler friendly wickets during his time away in SENA. He was not selected out on some spin friendly wickets where guy  like Nathan Lyon picked 10fer in 2014 Adaleide test.Has he under performed in some tests in SENA, yes he did, guy like Shane Warne did not perform in India.Murali did not perform at all in Australia or India where spinners like Udal won tests.

I would not hold his SENA record against Ashwin.

Ashwin is like open book, he wears his emotions on his sleeve. IMO him not able to take field after his batting injury did it for him.

We are not used to players getting retired without dragging so it seems very strange and difficult to accept but this is timely retirement. Ashwin decided not to be 3rd choice spinner although its different story that other 2 are preferred over him only because their batting is superior who will help protecting incompetent duo.

With series at 1-1 and Bumrah having all limelights, Ashwin has silently decided to walk away but once the series is decided and  dust settles down and once we start playing home series again, Ashwin's (Jaddu-Ash) importance will be realised. As soon India will struggle at home bowling out opposition or there will be need of lower order runs, people will realise how indispensable Ashwin was.

If he walked away in a huff i'm stiill not ruling out a comeback. He's a good guy but needs to feel appreciated. There is no big series in India now for some time and whether we will even pick him for Wtc final if we end up playing it is a question mark.

India is one country. SENA is 4 countries out of the 9 test playing nations.

We won't qualify for the WTC and I think the next test series is the one in England. So makes sense walking away but could have done it post series. Doing so in the middle of one raises a lot of doubts.

What is your point.

He did underperform overseas and it isn't equivalent to Warne not doing well in India. He is still a champion bowler and if not for Indias brittle batting order would have played more tests abroad and very likely would have had a much better record in SENA. He bowled beautifully in the last test series In Australia.

I never said they are equal. But Warne not performing well on pitches aiding spinners in India versus Ashwin not performing on seamer friendly wickets are two different things.

His avg in England is 28 and 33 in NZ in one test which is not bad for spinner.Australia he has done well in last two series.

SA other than 2013 Joburg test where he was ineffective most pitches India played were extremely seamer friendly.

Only thing he did not do is take 5fer or 10fers in SENA.
