Sandeep Patil criticises Jasprit Bumrah skipping Tests citing the example of Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar who 'never complained'

'I wonder how the BCCI is agreeing to all this': Jasprit Bumrah's workload management dismissed as 'nonsense'

After Sunil Gavaskar, another legend of Indian cricket has questioned and criticised Jasprit Bumrah's 'workload management'.

"I wonder how the BCCI is agreeing to all this. Is the physio more important than the captain, than the head coach? What about selectors? Are we to expect that the physio will be sitting in selection committee meetings now. Will he decide?" Patil told Mid-day.

"When you are picked for your country, you die for your country. You are a warrior. I have seen Sunil Gavaskar bat on all five days of a match, I’ve seen Kapil Dev bowl on most days of a Test match, and even bowl to us in the nets. They never asked for breaks, never complained, and their careers extended to 16-plus years. I didn’t miss the next Test after my head injury in Australia in 1981."

 

Not too long ago, the legendary Sunil Gavaskar, too, had expressed his frustration over 'workload management', reiterating Patil's point that playing for the country is an honour, where picking and choosing simply has scope. To add to the debate, a PTI report had stated that BCCI is not happy with Bumrah's limited participation on the tour of England. The point everyone seems to be missing here is that Bumrah's injury-prone body is not part of workload management. Patil, however, refers to it as 'nonsense' because he believes modern-day players are much more well-equipped than they were.

 

"Workload management is nonsense. You are either fit or unfit, and that’s how we [his selection committee] picked teams. We did not entertain this workload business. Modern-day players have all the facilities. We did not have such rehab programmes in our playing days. At times, we carried on playing despite injuries. Let’s just say we were happy playing for the country… no naatak."

These guys act like people are robots and everyone is the same make and model. 

 

Yes, Bumrah breaks down frequently. But when he's on, there's no one as good as him. So good management would maximize what they can get from him and try not to permanently damage him (although RoSha may have done it).

 

Ok, Kapil was more durable. Maybe Siraj is more durable. But Bumrah at his best is miles ahead of them both. We'd be stupid not to try and maximize what we can get from him.

 

People can be so callous.

India didn't have one win in SENA from mid 1986 to mid 2002. 

 

One win in Zim, one in Colombo, one in Dhaka in that period. Bangladesh like stats despite having arguably our greatest ever matchwinner, Kumble, for most of that period. 

 

13 wins in SENA since 2014 Lord's. Because of strike (fast) bowlers, foremost among them, Bumrah.

 

Enough of glorifying the past.

Let's compare actual work loads including the various formats.

 

To compare an elite fast bowler to a ultra defensive batsman and a medium pace bowler (who admittedly undertook a huge work load) is silly

imo Bumrah must skip IPL if he wants to keep playing Test cricket,there is no way he can survive playing both so he needs to decide soon.

If he had not announced about  playing only three tests before series started and still played only three tests none of this would have happened.

 

What was TM thinking, they screwed Bumrah royally by that announcement.

 

If Bumrah feels he is not ready to play, he is not ready to play, he knows his body well enough to take that decision.Lot of players have withdrawn from tests on morning of the test or even before the toss.

 

I cannot see any other reason other than helping people who gamble with their announcement before the series.

 

NFL has a rule to disclose injuries by teams for helping people who gamble but cricket has no such rules.

It is also wrong to ask Bumrah to forgo IPL earnings to extend his test career.He is allowed to take decisions which is best for him personally and financially.

 

Why should Bumrah suffer for being great.Players have limited earning span and they should be allowed to earn all they can while they are still able to earn.Nobody should begrude players for wanting to earn money.

Because you don't mingle with enemy players, specially smiling after a loss gives a feeling you dont care.

 

That is very different from missing Tests due to fitness. He did okay in Tests he played.

I think players are counselled to ignore the social media trolls as it only adds more stress.  If you look at it there are about 10 guys having multiple accounts spamming the internet and creating trends. We shouldn't take these guys seriously. Also former cricketers should not give focus to these trolls.

IPL workload is nowhere comparable to test cricket. U can run 100m everyday 365 days a year without training. 
But running 10km is a completely different challenge. Even if that’s done once a week.

If the players don’t wanna do it, I’m sure the coach can make a statement and be done with it. He doesn’t have to go overboard with it.
 

There’s a limit to this non sense and also there’s a difference between social media teenage trolls and former cricketers (who are actively involved in commentary and who work for the BCCI) making these stupid statements.
