Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has opined that the individuality of ODI cricket is lost somewhere between Test cricket's enduring value and the rising dominance of T20 cricket. He has also shown concern over how individual stars like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma draw people towards the ODI tournaments, which people do not witness otherwise.

Ravichandran Ashwin placed himself in the audience seat and claimed that he is concerned about the future of the ODI format with the retirement of senior cricketers like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

“I am not sure about the future of ODI after the 2027 World Cup. I am a little worried about it. Of course, I am following the Vijay Hazare Trophy, but the manner in which I followed SMAT, I am finding slightly difficult to follow,” Ashwin said on his Hindi YouTube channel, Ash Ki Baat.

He stressed the audience's preference towards watching more of T20s, alongside giving some space to Tests, but no space for ODI cricket. “I feel it is going towards slow death,” said Ravichandran Ashwin bluntly.

Ashwin highlighted the importance of big names in every format of the game. He has proved how Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's participation in the Vijay Hazare Trophy has drawn the attention of people, and as a result, many other young cricketers have also gotten the deserved spotlight.

“Look, Rohit and Virat came back to the Vijay Hazare Trophy, and people started watching it. We have known that sport is always bigger than individuals, but at times these players need to come back to make the game relevant,” he observed.

However, on the other hand, Ashwin talks about the changing nature of the one-day format. He claimed the format, which previously gave batters some time to settle down, has now evolved.

“One-day cricket, once upon a time, was an amazing format because it gave a player like MS Dhoni, who would take singles for 10-15 overs before he went berserk at the end,” he said.

According to Ashwin, that style has all but disappeared. “You don’t have players like that anymore, and there isn’t any requirement to play

like that, as you are playing with two new balls and five fielders inside the circle,” he said

Ravichandran Ashwin urges ICC to rethink its approach to ODI cricket, comparing it with the FIFA World Cup

The former Indian veteran spinner has pointed out that the ICC needs to rethink its approach for the format and acknowledge the importance of revenue simultaneously.

“The ODI format has become redundant, and to top it, the ICC needs to see how they are conducting these World Cups. Every year, there is an ICC tournament for revenue generation patterns, but then look at how FIFA is doing it,” he said.

He has further opined that too many international fixtures have acted like an overkill in cricket; hence, Ravichandran Ashwin suggested a structure like football, where teams and players are busy in franchise leagues, and the anticipation for a World Cup builds around the four-year gap between two such tournaments.

“If you really want to make ODI cricket relevant, then just play these leagues and play the ODI World Cup once in four years, so when people turn up for events, there will be a sense of expectation,” he said.

I think it's a fair prediction. Even as a fan, once you start watching a T20 match and start getting into yet, ODI feels so long. Espacially in those low scoring match. Other than the WC, CT and perhaps Asia Cup, do you guys watch ODI cricket anymore? I used to watch other teams play just for fun, or watch my favorite players play, but these days, it feels like a waste of a day.

Like it or not, but ODI cricket is on its way out. If we don't have a good 27 WC, expect BCCI to try its level best to kill the format...other boards will have no problem with it, sabko apna lucrative T20  league ka window chahiye. T20 WC will take 50 over WC's place, aur Olympics toh hai hi.

Though we won 25 CT, it barely registered. Was a whimper compared to our 2013 CT triumph, back when the format was king. Perhaps 23 WC was the final spark in this format before it extinguished completely

With or without them, ODI format is on its way out. Players and fans prefer T20 over ODI and there's nothing wrong with it.

T20 is not going anywhere. By 2050, cricket will mean t20. ODI should be dead before '40 and test by '50.

they said the same when sehwag, gauti retired, same when sachin saurav retired meh

And number of ODIs, particularly bilaterals have declined massively from that period so they were kinda right. When people predict death of such huge historic formats it doesn't mean they will disappear overnight

Bilateral cricket is in decline regardless of format.

In 2024, India played just 3 ODIs whole year, all of them in that SL tour, GG's first assignment !!!!! Unthinkable few years back.

Gill made his ODI debut in 2019, became a regular from the 2021-22 season, and despite hardly missing games in this format has played just 58 ODIs, 21 of those coming in 23 WC, 25 CT and the 23 Asia Cup....37 bilateral ODIs and half the decade is over.

Head has played 79 ODIs despite debuting in 2016.

Even if Jaiswal becomes a legend, doubt he will reach even 100 ODI caps. Nobody in the future will come close to 10k runs or 250 wickets in ODIs.

The odis are already gone, hardy any team plays Odis now. There are more t20 series with more games.  there are more 5 match t20i series than the Odi series.

The odis used to serve as gateway for test cricket for players but now the teams are selected from t20 leagues. So how it will work out is those who are not good at t20 cricket will try to develop game for test format and concentrate there.

Not sure if Odis will completely be gone as a format like 0%, because it still serve as a pipe line to test cricket.

T20 specialist can not bat or bowl in test, we are already seeing these being available and on ground for 5 days is becoming a skill now which was normal some time back.

In odis batters still need to play-out 80-100 balls to get to a ton which effectively mean they can bat 100 balls in test that can traslate to 50 runs of 100 balls which is still ok. In t20s no batter will be able to play 50 balls if they are not an opener or some one coming at #3 with in 1st few overs. And most batters take 30 ball innings a long innings and if they play 30 balls they need to be able to get a score which can break the match in their favour.

The other part is bowling and bowling of all kind, T20 bowling is going towards more of mystry/wrist spin and pacers with white-ball skills.

But it test need bowlers who can bowl longer spells mystery/wrist spin is still nt that common in test and wist spin is there for a v.long time now....still finder or conventional spinners are preferred in test .

And in test need bowlers with pace bounce zip and consistency but in t20 need bowlers with variations and again they must know how to bowl longer spells for 2-3 days.

So unless these format branch off completely in diff. ways like the track and field fr spinters and marathon runners there will be a need for Odi format.

T20 is cancer to Cricket. Ruined the techniques of players and it is just blindless hitting now. Time to focus on other sports.

But that is where the dough is

Pujara net worth 30 crores at best

Deepak Chahar net worth 66 crores

Who contributed to INdia? Pujara batted 2200 balls in 8 tests in A ustralia taking blows to body. Has the highest balls per dismissla in Australia. What has Chahar done anything? This is why youngsters will develop skills more towards playing t20

Sports are for entertainment, its odd to think ppl will be interested in investing 5 days or 1 full day in 1 game.

T20 are right way forward.  Short entertaining.

Any longer game has to create fake audiences, be it tennis, golf, tour de france, some other rallies, marathon races...its either fake or niche audiences thats it.

All these events happen once a year, you can attract casual audiences for few days but not for test where it goes whole year..

If cricket has extra money they can create that for test cricket and then still test player can make similar kind of mony as t20s.
