Punch line of WC'16 - "Silencing the Indian crowd"

I have heard this statement atleast 20 times during this WC and found it quite distasteful actually. before they used to murmur about this in pressmeets. Now the australian and english commentators are openly using this as some kind of a rallying point or more like a war cry.

 

These guys need to remember that other than for test cricket in England, even their crowds are mostly silent when their team is losing but for the massive Indian cricket fanbase who travel with the team or the diaspora who support the team wherever they go in the commonwealth.

 

I thought this was such a negative attitude to silence the people who came to the stadium for entertainment. I guess, Nasser Hussain would want to silence the Indian crowd, chase them away and then play test cricket on green wickets with the audience mostly consisting of a not-so-motley crowd of octogenarians half asleep from boredom.

 

But its such a shame really that Indians dont applaud a fine catch or a massive six, even from the Windies who are the only team who like our players and show open support.

We're pretty quiet whatever is happening on the field tbf, apart from the drunken idiots who don't go for the cricket, just to get pissed, and end up hardly watching a ball. I prefer it quieter and the shouting and jumping around at Asian grounds would drive me mad! But that's just the culture of each country and I'm certainly not going to criticise you for enjoying your cricket. You just enjoy it in a different way to us

I felt very embarrassed when watching last test series in England tbh. They were clapping for all the boundaries that the Indian team hits, even during very tight see-saw situations.

I felt the mumbai crowd was poor yesterday, it is understandable it is semi-final of game.

 

But when things got tight and started going wrong, everyone went into prayer mode (silence), instead of trying to cheer India to the last ball or applauding WI fours & sixes.

 

South Africa fans have been brilliant in that sense, give their full backing to SA even when the game is more or less lost.

Wonder why there isn't any support for other team? Isn't there reserved seats for visiting teams fans? I could see only 4 or 5 people from West Indies. Even in neutral matches like Aus vs NZ, only Indian crowd is there.

Indian fans are one of the worst when it comes to applause for the opposition. This is nothing new. Well we take the cake but the entire bakery goes to Bangladeshi fans.

Not to generalise the Indian crowd... There are certain venues where the Crowd behave class less and one of them in Mumbai. The crowd in Chennai, Bangaluru, Hyderabad, Mohali, Delhi etc are very sportive...

Oh Come on...bangladeshi fans are nowhere to India. TBH, i was just hoping to have a full match yesterday. Thankfully, it was not a one sided game against India otherwise we might have witnessed another 96 incident...

There's no hate towards West Bengalis. Or Bangladeshis. Bangladeshis are regarded as irrelevant. They keep pestering us to hate them like they hate us, but at most that results in us viewing them as annoying. 

 

As for West Bengalis, they're an emotional lot who love their sport, and have contributed a lot to Indian cricket. The 1996 incident at Eden Gardens was an embarrassment.

While watching the match at home, do people clap when the opposition scores a boundary in a nail biter? Why would we expect the crowd to be clapping when the opposition hits a boundary or takes a wicket.  Reaching milestones like a half century, you can understand the crowd acknowledging the players.

Crowd for Test matches in England is different ..

 

Their football crowd treats league derbies like Arsenal Vs. Tottenham as Do-or-die and equally non-sporting ..going to the extent of letting other side know that they would kill rather than lose the derbie ..So , all this cultural thing is bogus..the passionate working class crowd in England does not come for test matches or cricket

Indian fans are some of the worst fans when it comes to appreciating the opposition in the stadium.I mean it was pin drop silence when the windies were hitting some monstrous shots and it just shows the bias.come on its a t20 game,at least applaud the opposition

This might be true actually.wankhede crowd is always pathetic.delhi,Chennai would have applauded the opposition i am sure,even Bangalore went pin drop Silent against Bangladesh,kolkata is also pathetic

I don't think it's a big deal. T20 games move very fast. Even the spectators are under considerable stress as each ball/over is like an event. It's very difficult to applaud the opposition during the game because they are so invested in their home team. I'm sure after the game, after the loss sinks in, they'd have no problem in appreciating the opposition.

 

As long as the spectators don't abuse the opposition players or create nuisance and stop the game, it's all fine.

 

The crowds for the games not involving India were pretty decent (in numbers) in this WC. So you can't say Indian spectators are only interested in India's wins and do not appreciate cricketers of other countries.

Nothing wrong with it. Indian fans actually become quiet when the opposition hits a boundary or take a wicket. It's just a subcontinent thing.
