India Batting Depth: Ashwin batting at no.6/Poor Team selection?

Recommended Posts

You can either play with 5 specialist bowler or with 6 specialist batsman+Keeper. Ojha or Rahul should be keeping, fr me its Ojha till we find a prototype MSD. Also we need to choose between Mishraji Jaddu and Ashwin who we want to play depending on opposition and pitch.

We have 3 very good test batsmen in Kohli, Rahane and Vijay.  They have done well all over the world and have the will to win test matches.

Playing 5 batsmen, having a keeper who is not a consistent performer with the bat and having tailenders who have a tendency  of getting out quickly in succession, is making our batting lineup lack depth.

We desperately need a proper keeper-batsman. In the longer run, it would be ideal if Rahul can work hard on his keeping and can become a test-level keeper. As of now he is not a dependable keeper at all.

We need to find or develop a proper all-rounder who can bat at no.6 and  is a proper bowler too.  Ashwin practicing his batting a lot and improving his consistency maybe a temporary solution till we find someone else. Other bowlers will have to practice their batting too if we want to play 5 batters.

Whenever Ashwin bats for any length of time in a test match, it becomes quite clear that he has the talent to be a proper batsman. He plays with a straight bat, can handle bounce and is not unusually hurried by pace. Looks comfortable and relaxed and always plays at a brisk pace which is important if the team is looking to win test matches.

Guys like Rohit and Dhawan often look more circumspect than Ashwin in a test match while batting.  If Ash can practice his batting regularly then we may have a proper all-rounder in our test team.

Am I the only one who likes to watch Ashwin bat? Very elegant and a good stroke player.

But yes not that reliable yet to bat at No6 even though the talent is obviously there.

ashwin bats like some improved version of vvs :giggle:

Ashwin's batting well, but Windies are letting him.  5 batsmen against better opposition will get exposed.  We definitely need a better batting keeper, and a test class bowler who can bat a bit apart from Ashwin.

But for this opposition and this wicket, this mix should be good enough to win easy.

IF Saha has a poor series with the bat, I dont know why a Dinesh Karthik shouldn't be re-considered.

A keeper who can bat is always a bonus.....With the limited ability of our bowling to get 20 wickets on most occasions,it is ideal to have a good keeper and what ever runs he makes as a bonus.

Karthik is a very poor keeper and so is Pappu Patel who is a very talented batsman too.

I dont think Karthik is that poor a keeper.  Pappu definitely was, and has improved a bit from all accounts,  but I think he hardly keeps for FC now.  So that ship has sailed.  But we can get a year or 2 out of Karthik/Ojha if Saha doesn't step up.  There's no need to go scraping the youth bucket if nobody's ready for that international level...

DK's keeping is like his batting , inconsistent though he can be brilliant both with the bat and ball . His batting had so much potential , he has so much time playing his shots , technique as good as anyone ..but lets him self and the team down way too often ..mentally very weak I guess

In tests, Ashwin seems to look more reliable then some of our  front line batters  .
