Players who could have played more international cricket

Andrian Bharat - WI - He got a wonderful test century in australia (in perth) and looked world class. He disappeared into oblivion, never to be seen again. Last time I checked, he wasn't even playing domestic cricket.

 

Subramaniam Badrinath - IND - In an other era, he could have got lot of more chances in Test cricket. He is not the world beater but had the ability to serve Indian cricket for certain period fo time.

 

Sherwin Campbell - WI -- I watched some of his innings and looked dangerous opening batsmen. Surprised he didnt played more matches, esp considering that he plays for WI.

T A Sekhar ---- With the low quality of  pacers we had in the early '80s, apart from Kapil Dev, it is a mystery why Sekhar got so few chances.  He was a genuinely quick bowler and troubled the best in the few chances he got.  

 

Laxman Sivaramakrishnan -- Had the ability to turn deliveries even on flattish tracks and could have been a top performer if he had more discipline and focus at a young age.

 

Ashish Winston Zaidi -- Was a skiddy fast bowler of genuine pace and a top domestic performer for many years, It is a mystery why he never got an international call-up.  Srinath and Zaidi could have formed a potent combo.

 

Rakesh Patel -   He was an outswing bowler from Baroda and was fast-medium.  Could have been tried in international crciket as he had the pace + skill combo.

 

Stuart McGill -- he would have been an ATG if he was born in a different era with Warne not in contention. never saw anyone turn the ball so much apart from Murali.

No, he was really good.  You perhaps saw him during his last years bowling on a patta.

Robin Singh could have played more for India as he was a good batsman at no 6 ,a useful medium pacer & a very good fielder.

 

Neil Johnson was also a very good allrounder for Zimbabwe. He single handedly defeated south Afrika in.a world cup match.

 

Md Zahid was a fast bowler ,had a 10 wicket haul in his debut match .But his career was cut short by injuries.

An allrounder like Laxmi.Ratan Shukla should have played more games .He had got a chance in 1999 after u19 world cup.

Sairaj Bahtule is another leg spinner who could have played more but his career overlapped with.Kumble

Sarandeep Singh ' career was also overshadowed by the emergence of Harbhajan.Singh.

 

Another players who could have played more are Rethinder Sodhi,Hemang Badani,Dinesh Mongia,Harvinder Singh,Aakash Chopra,

LR Shukla was not international class.  Him and Abhishek Nayyar - classic examples of one-eyed kings in blind men's kingdom.  

 

Am shocked nobody remembers Pravin Amre.  He was a quality batsman.  

 

Badani had potential but threw away too many opportunities.  Mongia was a classic flat track bad team bully.  All he had going for him was a big 100 against Zim.

Sanjay Bangar! What a player he was. He was gutsy, he could bat well and he was more than a decent medium pace bowler.

Saba Karim. One of the best wicketkeepers for India ever, but was hardly given a chance. When Pakistan had toured India in 98 and had bowlers like Wasim, Waqar and Shoaib, he was one of the few players who opened the innings without any fear and still tried to hold one end as long.

Then there were others ie Iqbal Siddiqui,Tinu Yohanan,Rahul Sanghavi,Nikhil Chopra,Hrishkesh Kanitkar,Vijay Bharadwaj,Dinesh Gandhi,Sadgopan Ramesh,Amit Bhandari,Bhupinder Singh Jr,Msk Prasad,Noel David,Deep Dasgupta.

 

There can also be thread on the most shocking selection in.the Indian team

Darren Ganga-Thought he would have made a wonderful captain...had the same qualities as Darren Sammy and was much better cricketer as he was a frontline batsman.

 

Gagan Khoda-One of those classic Domestic Run machines....bit biased here but I remember watching this double wicket contest as a kid which had big names like Azhar,Sachin,Kambli,Danny Morrison,Ian Bishop(WI) around the time after the Nzl tour in 1994 in Mumbai and he hit some big 6's against the fast bowlers.....now Morrison might not be a 150 k bowler and Ian Bishop might have been on his way down but in those days apart from SRT and to some extent Azhar...our batsman would never hit 6's against the fast bowlers.

 

Yusuf Pathan-Should have been in the scheme of things in LOI's....yeah he did not perform upto the mark but deserved some more chances than what he got in the end.

 

Patrick Patterson-93 wickets in 28 tests,90 wickets in 59 ODI's and boom he disappeared...I was reading an article about him the other day as his whereabouts are currently unknown...one theory is he became a drug addict and became homeless and the other is he migrated to USA and is living  a normal life.

 

Ben Hollioake-Tragically died at 25 but he made his debut at 20 and in 5 years and played only 2 tests and 20 ODI's in this time frame...thought he was a better LOI player than the Ealhams and Ronnie Iranis and even his brother whom England tried in the 90's.

 

Stuart MacGill-Shane Warne enough said.

 

S.Ramesh-one of the victims of Ganguly's talent initiative...a very good player and I think deserved a lot more chances than he got.

Sadagopan Ramesh threw star tantrums that cost him his place with John Wright as coach.  Didn't want to work on fitness, thought he could get away with 90s style attitude.  He was on the comeback trail in 2003, and was neck and neck with Veeru and Akash Chopra for the opener's slot in the test series down under.  Rest is history - Veeru scored that 195 at melbourne, and Chopra was seen as a much better foil for him as opposed to pairing him with another 'dasher' in Ramesh.  Thus endeth his career.  Didn't he start making movies or something?

 

Sanjay Bangar made 110% of his 10% talent.  Was a very limited batsman, and an even more limited bowler.  But will always remember him fondly for his supporting role in setting up that test match win in England.

Brett Schultz was a South Affican left arm pacer when India toured there in.1993.

Simon Jones a English pacer ,his career was cut short by injuries.

Alex Tudor was a England fast bowler but i think he is more famous for his 99 runs in.a test match.

The few that stand out to me:

 

1. Rajinder Goel : a guy who averages 18.58, taking 750 wickets from 157 matches in domestic cricket, in an era when every visiting team played 2-3 FC games in India, players like Gavaskar, Vengsarkar, Amaranth, Vishwanath, etc. were regular participants in domestic cricket, is mind-boggling. His curse ? Bishen Bedi. As the best left arm slow bowler of the 60s & 70s (ahead of Underwood in my opinion), who was also supremely fit and rarely missed a match, Goel was almost never in contention to begin with.

 

2. Sylvester Clarke  & Wayne Daniel : Both these two would've been an automatic in any international XI, except their own. They were both extremely good bowlers, Sylvester a page off of Andy Robert's book : fast, furious, accurate and a brutal bouncer, Wayne Daniel a page off of Malcolm Marshall's - fast, skiddy, movement. But they had the misfortune to be squished into a 10 year period where WI had to pick 4 of Roberts, Holding, Garner, Marshall, Croft & Walsh. They got a few chances here or there, but never the chance to settle. The rebel tours of South Africa put an end to their international careers when they were in their late 20s.

 

3. All the Saffie greats who missed out due to apartheid : Peter Pollock, Barry Richards, Graeme Pollock, Garth Le Roux, Vincent Van Der Bijl, Clive Rice, Mike Proctor, etc.
