Countdown to Shikhar Dhawan's Career End. Should be his last year.....

Dhawan didn't play 10 matches in wc. So don't know how you cooked that. Would rather have someone like kohli or someone down the order use the deliveries than rahane even if  rahane was poor in t20 earlier too. It is not like we were getting anything better.

That was a hypothetical example....Dhawan was in atrocious for leading up to the semis,so for a crucial game they changed things around,so what is wrong with that?

Just of rush of blood for people who are excited to see new talent doing well and fanboyim for a particular player. Not long ago Rihit was suckinng momentumt by batting slow up the order and Shikhar would have to pick the rr alone or get out. To Rohit's credit, he would pick up run rate later when batting with the other top order players and middle order but he used to wait till way late. Dhawan is the prime example of an opener of what he should be looking to do for the team. I would happily keep him around for now unless he has an extremely poor run.

The main issue here is that ODIs have changed a lot in the last 2 years or thereabouts. We are getting much bigger scores and  all good teams have introduced high SR batsmen both as one of the openers as well as a couple of finishers. Having just high average batsmen is not enough these days.  SR plays a big part as really big scores are being notched up much more regularly.

We Indians have a team where ALL our batters have either mediocre or low SRs by modern standards.  Now, we need 3 such batters, who have high averages, to hold the innings together and tackle quality bowling, like Kohli.....BUT all batters cannot be such.

Look at the high SRs of opening ODI batsmen in the last 2 years.... all good teams have atleast ONE  high SR ( above 100 )  opener and most have good to decent averages too.  We have none and this aspect needs to be rectified.

We must think from the point of view of team composition and not individual players.  BOTH  Rohit and Dhawan are mediocre SR batters and their recent  averages have been embellished by high scores on the last Australian ODI tour when the Aussies tried out inexperienced and often mediocre  seamers throughout that tour.

This is a bigger problem I feel. Plenty of times we find ourselves at 200-220/3 by the 40th over only to finish at 280-300. Not enough impact from the lower-middle order.

I see the point people are making about Dhawan and Rohit being too similarly-paced but they are not even our secondary concern right now. Lower middle order and Dhoni's replacement are greater concerns imo.

Pant and Kishen are competing for the Dhoni slot or even maybe Yuvraj slot......Dhawan is competing with Rahul...Rahul has still not had that consistency in any format. it is boom or bust with him.

Pant can bat anywhere. He is an opener and opened for Delhi in age group tournaments, for India U19, and for DD in IPL in a few matches. He might still open in Vijay Hazare trophy for Delhi.

Problem is, even the new players we have tried at No.5 and No.6 in the recent past are not really big hitters and won't score at really high SRs barring an odd match or two.  Now we have introduced Yuvraj who has not played ODis in the recent past and  has a  T20I  SR of 97  ( very low  for T20s )  in the last 2 years

Yes no one is denying the lower n middle order problem , i did make a thread on it last year and it still does exists.

But that doesnt mean we shud forget and improve in other areas, now we have the arsenal to improve the top order and We should. About middle and lower well we still are figuring out players and trying there as well and since there more than one position it will take time.

M not even completely ruling out dhawan, practically he hs time to prove us wrong. IF dhawan or pant comes of rahul can bat in middle. But dhawan has left a lot to be desired despite doing welll.

There needs to some changes from top to lower order. We need more match winners . If we are not able to crack right players in middle doesnt mean we shud ignore the problem at top.

Dhawan has shown a distinct weakness against the seaming ball or the outside off line n short ball so unless he I proves on that he won't be very successful as his initial year, hope he learns n works hard n not goes I to denial like Gambhir, Raina and others.

He scored century in NZ in seaming conditions the only place he struggled is SA. He had issues with short ball.

The main issue here is that ODIs have changed a lot in the last 2 years or thereabouts. We are getting much bigger scores and  all good teams have introduced high SR batsmen both as one of the openers as well as a couple of finishers. Having just high average batsmen is not enough these days.  SR plays a big part as really big scores are being notched up much more regularly

That shouldn't be our concern at this time when we are currently struggling more at the bottom where we fail to convert good starts into high scores.

If we are 220-3 in 40 overs, we have to at least finish beyond 300 most times, or say at least take it to till 315. Lack of consistency down the order with lot of inexperience and decline in form of players like Raina has resulted in our poor show. This is the reason why Dhoni has taken time also to not go big right away in 40th over, because below him, he is worried about us having a collapse, and it is the right concern. Yes, contrary to people saying he has lost reflexes, I think him slowing down is more because he has batted conservatively for the team's cause to ensure there is no collapse. He can still hit big, like you saw in the warm up earlier.

With Shikhar, I do not have problem with that strike rate. Rohit and Shikhar both fire on different days. Some days you will notice Shikhar having a higher strike and then in some days, Rohit will have a higher strike rate. Though, most times I have noticed that Rohit has been slow in last 1 year, and he only picks up once he is settled or has scored 40-50 runs, thus showing that he is working for the team, but not necessarily means that he is a better opener than Dhawan.  If Shikhar and Rohit put India at 100-1 in 19th-20th over, that is perfect platform for Kohli and co, to take the score to 315+ in next 180 deliveries. So strike rate talk of an opener is absolutely useless, unless we are talking about slow tortoise like strike rate which a player like Azhar Ali from Pakistani bats at.

Best batsmen in last champions trophy in England. Also batted well in ODI World Cup in Australia.

This comment is logical when you read only stats.. but if you actually look at the innings and watch the match you would know what actually happened.. he was edging and pulling shots in air.. he didnt have quality in his innings.. Same thing happened in test matches in NZ.. he failed in all test innings but made 1 hundred where he had lot of hit and miss chances.. and that made his stats look better.

Rohit Sharma tuk-tuk-tuk for 15 overs does not suit modern ODIs. After 15 overs, he likely throws it away. In instances where goes till 45 overs, yes he accelerates and its a good innings. But many times he throws it away in 10-20 overs after sllooowww start.

Pant can bat anywhere. He is an opener and opened for Delhi in age group tournaments, for India U19, and for DD in IPL in a few matches. He might still open in Vijay Hazare trophy for Delhi.

Best way to wreck a newbie wicketkeeper is to get him to open. Don't say 'but Gilchrist'- Gilly perfected his primary craft (keeping) for six years before he opened in international cricket.

Right now, we need a long term wicketkeeper. Saha isn't a long term option, Dhoni is almost done. Pant, Kishan etc. are showing signs they can be the long term option, but i'd rather have then be a stellar keeper + above average bat than stellar bat + above average keeper.

Look up India vs nz series. He used to suck all the momentum and we used loose wickets.

It was in 2014.

In all these ODIs he sucked momentum. His strike rate is horrible for a opener in these Odis.

The problem with him is he can't find the gaps and pinch singles. He always goes for the glory shots and if he gets out early we will be in big trouble.

Not saying that we shouldn't look to fix our problems but drastic changes don't always work out well. We'll see though. The title says Countdown to Dhawan's last year, which is a long enough rope for him.

We should look to score 130-140 in first 20 overs and 140-150 in the next 20 and 90-100 runs in the final 10 overs. We are struggling between the overs 35 and 45 and that is where the problem lies, not with the openers.
