Lungi Ngidi tipped for Proteas Test honours

Cape Town - Former Proteas all-rounder Albie Morkel believes that Lungi Ngidi will be South Africa's new ball Test bowler in the near future.

Ngidi, 20, is one of the six caps who has been called up to the Proteas squad for the first two T20Is of the series against Sri Lanka.

Morkel believes that his Titans team-mate has what it takes to open the bowling for the Proteas alongside Kagiso Rabada in the next few years.

Ngidi made his Sunfoil Series debut this season and has taken 11 wickets in three appearances thus far.

"KG (Kagiso Rabada) and Lungi Ngidi will open the bowling for South Africa in all formats," Morkel was quoted as saying on the Titans' official website.

"Lungi needs one or two seasons, and it is one of the things that we want to do at the Titans - to strengthen his resolve and his mental game, because international cricket can be an unforgiving game.

"He has got such a good head on his shoulders. He bowls a heavy ball, almost like Jacques Kallis did. He can bowl it up at 138 km/h and even faster."

Morkel, who is the skipper of the Titans, said that although a T20 selection could be great exposure for the young fast bowler, he's still two seasons away from a potential Test cap.

"It is fine that he plays T20 cricket for South Africa and is selected to possibly start on Friday at SuperSport Park against Sri Lanka," said Morkel.

"But he might still be a season or two away from representing South Africa (in Test)."

Ngidi could possibly make his Proteas debut on Friday in the first T20 at Centurion (18:00 SA time).

Another young fast bowler from South Africa, just 20 year old. He is tall and pretty quick. Was hitting 140K. Made his debut in in yesterday's game. Got MOTM. He has played just 7 FC games. That is how you bring young pacers early and not let them rot in domestic cricket. Might be another story like Rabada for SA.

This is how good fast bowlers are developed.... teams who have produced good quicks in the past, like South Africa,  know how it is done.

You have to identify talent that can succeed in international cricket and fast-track them if they are pacers .....as age is a big factor for fast bowlers.

No matter when you introduce pacers in international cricket, they need a couple of season to get ready, sometimes even more if they are Indians.... it is better to start the process early.

We, on the other hand, just look at total wickets in the last Ranji season    !!

they love their fast bowling ,they big them up even if they are not that quick ,yesterday sa commentator was saying why graphics showed ngidi  as fast medium and not fast even though he bowled only upto 140k and joking that graphics guys should have to face him as punishment, its all about what you like ,then they will then search for it and promote it

And I have heard some of our commentators call Aaron, bowling 150 k,   a "medium pacer"

bowled 140+ yesterday, got extra bounce from short of a length.

Don't worry.....we are developing Siddharth  Kaul ,  with his 122 k  missiles,  to answer Lungi

He seems to be the next in line for India debut going by selectors' preferences.

Eagerly waiting for  Kaul, Vignesh and Vinay to form our " pace attack "  or,  shall I say,    " lack-of-pace  non-attack " ....and Stuart Binny as the seam-all-rounder.

Opposition batsmen will tremble in their pants.

the problem is soil in india dont help the quicker bowlers ,tactically control swing bowlers are better if pitch is green, other than that just keep it tight ,the pitches are such if you bowl over 135 the ball comes on nicely on to that bat for good batsmen , at around 120 it doesnt come on and is difficult to hit.

I think a bigger factor is the mindset of Ranji batsmen

They play too many loose shots outside the off-stump, especially if runs are not coming readily.  Any seamer who can keep bowling outside off-stump will eventually see batsmen flashing at one and edging it to slips.

Seamers who bowl without much effort can keep on bowling over after over and their chances of wickets increase a lot.  Fast bowlers, with their shorter spells,  have less chance of wickets as they bowl much less deliveries and  it is the work-horses who make merry in Ranji Trophy.  If they are made to bowl more then they get tired or injured or reduce pace.

When they go to the international stage.....the batsmen there have much tighter games and they don't give up their wickets easily and need really good deliveries to be dismissed.  So these trundlers fail.
