Preparations for SA should start now.

Who should play at no 6?

Saha/Ash/Pandya

Should Pandya even play outside the SC?

Your views.

Ash definitely outside SC but that would be possible only if he has improved his game to be the lone spinner overseas.

Ash is clearly a better batsman than the other 2. If we are to play 5 bowlers we have to play Ashwin purely based on the ease with which he plays the seaming ball.

If he can average 35-40 at number 6 and average 40 with the ball(min 20 overs per day) with E/R under 3.5 he will walk in.

Ash at 6, Saha at 7.   Pandya needs to show a lot more with both bat and ball before we start dreaming of slotting him in at #6.

Against SL, we can carry him in the team as a bonus batsman and bonus bowler.   And we should.  So that he starts developing as a test player.  But in a crunch away test against SA/Eng/OZ, we need our best XI on the ground.  On such a tour - I start thinking of Ashwin as the 4th/5th bowler who can bat.   Play him along with a Chahal/Kuldeep as the primary wrist spinner who can turn the ball even if the wicket has little help or grip for spin - scenarios where Sir's bowling effectively gets nullified.   Or Play Ash and Pandya along with 3 frontline pacers on a out and out pacer's wicket.

Exactly.  We need to start thinking of Ashwin as a #6 batsman who can bowl when it comes to away tours.   He's clearly capable enough with the bat to handle the responsibility.  And this will give him increased opportunities to try and become more effective with the ball.

It would be interesting to see this lineup on our tour of SA

Rahul

Vijay

Pujara

Kohli

Rahane

Ashwin

Saha

Pandya

Bhuvi (Jaddu if spinning pitch)

Shami

Umesh

I think that gives us the best chance of winning overseas.  9 capable batsmen and 5 capable bowlers.

Honestly speaking the XI looks solid. If we don't have any selection brain fades like picking Maggi, Dhawan etc or dropping Ashwin/Shami for some random guys we will compete well. In my mind this Indian team is no less, in some aspects even better compared to the 2010-11 team. This SA team is weaker than that great SA unit, no reason why we can't create history even if it is a long 4 test series. I hope we get the Boxing Day and New Years tests, will attract a good crowd and more hype.

Couple of things we must do to win there apart from picking the right XI

1. Hold on to 90% catches and I can't stress this enough. Continue with tripe catching and batting/bowling will be rendered redundant.

2. Prepare well, reach SA 1 month in advance and familiarize with the conditions. Overseas we are notoriously slow starters and a defeat in the first test may have heartbreaking consequences.

I am hoping Pandya can eventually get there. Ashwin at the moment seems most capable though he struggles outside SC and WI. I would keep the lineup a little fluid and change it based on conditions and time of the day. Towards the fag end of the day if bowlers are tired and wicket is flat, Pandya could provide a good impetus to the scoring.
