Should a player be played on current form or past reputation?

Rahane has looked totally out of sorts in this series.

 

Now sure he might look like a million bucks in South Africa and start hitting 100s for fun but that is only a guess at this stage and the only credible evidence for that is past performance.

 

So should a player be played on what his past records are despite him looking totally out of sorts and out of form at the moment? This is a high profile series and can’t afford assumptions.

Going by current form Rahane has no shot whatsoever but turnarounds happen in cricket.

Should Kolhi have been dropped after his disastrous England tour? Surely 5 tests are a good indication! - That should answer OP's question.

 

Continous chopping and changing never works. Proven performers should be backed through their bad patch. Rahane is clearly our top 2 batsman overseas so needs to be backed unless he fails overseas as well.

This is why they get paid the big bucks and we are honorary keyboard selectors.  The issue with this management is that, once they find a batsman, they are very reluctant to drop him in favor of an in-form newbie unless there is an injury situation.  The three players that are glaring head-scratchers are MSD in T20s, DK in LOIs, and Rohit Sharma in the test team.  This has kept guys like Pant and Iyer waiting; in Pant's case, he lost his form and confidence and is having to work his way back.

whos in form that should replace Rahane now ? its too late for that .

We have picked Dhawan/Rohit based on the assumption that they have suddenly developed a technique to play in SA , in comparison assuming a class player will come back to from is a safer bet .

A captain has to know his right horses and back it and most importantly not give up one them after a bad series or two

 

Any question will never have a specific answer. Its like how some players get extra chances and some always walk on thin ice

 

If a captain knws that a player is very important for him so he shud be backed...

Someone eg 

dhawan was out of form before 2015Wc and not even in team before 2017CT

Yuvi was not in gr8 form before 2011 Wc.

 

But they were backed

 

 

This was a gr8 example how kumble was backed 

 

Now coming to rahane, this for me is kohli big test how he backs his gun player overseas. Rahane is an important pillar overseas and he needs to be backed. Many in past have gone through bigger slumps but they have come out of it.

Dhawan and Rohit are picked because the selectors think Dhawan is one of the top 3 openers in the country and Rohit is one of the best middle order options in the country-Sure you may dispute that line of thinking,lot of fans have but is what it is..when they get a shot they have cashed in weak opposition or not.

 

Rahane has been woefully out of form over a few tests now....the only line of thinking is that he performed well there 3 years back.

 

Playing Rahane hoping he will back to form and perform like how he did 3 years back is a more of a gambling decision than a rational one.

Its not only coz he score runs 3 yrs back in SA, he scored everywere and the quality of innings were top notch

He looks the best player against Moving ball .....

That shud have a lot of weightage atleast more then that of dhawan n rohits' runs on pattas

If Anyone watched Rahane bat, Can easily see exactly why he succeeds overseas. He has solid head postion, Gives full face of bat and more often then not plays text book shots. Text book cant be wrong

Huh? Where did I mention replace him with rohit...on one hand we are sitting out Rahul who is in great form and on the other hand we are playing a guy who is in atrocious form...that doesn’t make him a bad player...he is just going through a very tough patch.
