Agreed, even when I watched ODI cricket from 80's footage, there were plenty of flat pitches too back then. One of Viv Richards' favourite shots was hitting the ball across the line, a shot which is a big no no against the moving ball.

Rohit Sharma is a beast in ODIs regardless of pitch. He has improved lately and double hundred was always coming with opposition being SL. A terrific atg ODI player in making.

IMO a bigger issue is his shot selection and the habit of hanging the bat aimlessly. In test cricket against quicks the primary rule is: don't hang your bat outside off....either leave or play decisively.
