For me it is Virat's 119 against the Proteas in Joburg in 2013. Quality innings against Stern, Morkel and Philander. With Steyn testing him against short ball and Kohli hooking and pulling towards deep square leg and deep mid wicket.

And how could I forget the great Kallis in that bowling attack. Virat was in the zone in that innings. So wonderful to watch when Steyn was trying to set Kohli up for a false shot and Kohli smiling coz he knew what was to come & dealt in boundaries.

3 pull shots. 2 on Kallis' ball and 1 against Steyn and ball didn't even rise high on 2 ocassions.

 

NZ inning had more shots on higher balls.

Striking part of that video was Tahir's rubbish bowling. Maharaj is a different beast altogether, run scoring is going to be tough against him.

Yes NZ one had more nevertheless but Steyn was testing him against the short balls. I thought he'd give them a catch through a mistimed shot high up in the air, glad he was able to pull through.

The century against NZ in Basin reserve was also a good one.

Same feeling here. Whenever he came to bowl in that test, the Indians found easy run scoring opportunity against him.

Tahir has become a much better bowler since then and in the upcoming tests I hope we don't turn Maharaj into Moeen Ali 2.0.

I don't know about best, but I remember Dhoni's counterattacking test innings against Akhtar with fondness.  Hooked and pulled bigmouth fat-arse Shoaib into submission.

I have heard  Amarnath’s innings vs WI against the ATG quartet was some of the best innings against fast bowling by Indian batsmen.

 

Is there footage of it?

 

Having said that the Sachin-Azhar partnership in 1996 in cape town was one of the best displays of skills against quality pace on a tough track I have ever seen by Indian batsmen. Yes there was a lot of shot pitch stuff dishes out there as well.

 

Not romanticizing the past but that was a tougher pitch and I would say equally good if not better attack.

For hooks and pulls, Kapil usually comes to mind ....  Gavaskar was probably great at it too but from what I have read, he cut down on those shots as he got out to them on a few occassions

very true regd jimmy. amarnath was arguably india's best ever player of fast bowling at his peak.
