And also what if Aggarwal fails in next two games against Bangla and SL? We will then again go back to Rahul for semi final game. Thats like putting pressure on all 3 - Rohit, Rahul and Aggarwal.

@Cricketics

What if KL plays unconvincingly in  the next 2 games ? We risk him in the semis chasing a steep total against Eng again ?

The mental approach is more important. Pant came in his first game in a situation the match was almost lost and played a fighting 32 odd in quick time. he will only get better. Problem with KL is his inability to rotate strike with Rohit - you think this is not putting pressure on Rohit ?

2 games is enough to get semi final ready. There are many days to get acclimated.

Mayank rotates strike and is mentally much tougher than KL

Yes, we do. Cricket is all about risk, the game is all about risk. So we have to stick with them. Back your warriors now even though one of them might look wounded. I honestly don't think Rahul is that bad. Moment he is dropped, people want him back in the team for a reason because people do see some talent in him. I don't buy into all that mental-midget talk. Anyone can fail in World Cup games. Its time to just forget about changing the opening pair and may be fix middle and lower order.

Dhawan is long gone and Rahul has replaced him, now just stick with Rahul/Rohit till the end.

  1. Why should the Indian batting unit, even old man Dhoni and his limited 'batting', and Kedar, "show their hand" in attempting an unrealistic chase, when you have pretty much nothing to gain even if we win?

It isn't about showing their hand, that is their 'aukat'. Dhoni is finished, Jadhav is a decent ODI batsman but of limited use as hitter down the order. It wasn't all that unrealistic for the modern era. The question of 'why' doesn't arise. As players representing Team India it is their responsibility to give their best, these 2 haven't done much this WC and the match was against hosts, also one of the tournament favorites. Motivation can't be an issue, it was total incompetence.

Quote
  1. Take a step back and think about the psychological implication of yesterday's game - India batted with exaggerated caution, took minimal risk, and still managed to get to a reasonably decent platform at around the 35th over - sure about 20 runs short of the perfect platform, but still decent. Even with "giving up", the team still scored 70+ in the last 10 overs, and got to within 30 runs of the target.   England now know that even with an early wicket, and even with 28 runs in the 1st 10 overs, India are comfortably capable of getting to 320+ in 50 overs - more if they really needed to.

Exaggerated caution cos that is the new Indian batting template, unlikely to change in the remaining matches. Dhawan's exit has made matters worse, for so long he was the aggressor in the first 10 and now we have his replacement, a timid deer trying to skate. Don't for a moment think we were 28/1 after 10 due to choice, that was a compulsion and we will repeat the performance in KOs. Under pressure people always resort to old habits. All our shortcomings were exposed yesterday, there was no psychological advantage to gain. Aussie sharks will now sense blood in the water.

Quote

Bottomline from yesterday's game is this - England needed to resort to drastic measures - 59m boundary etc, have a lot of things go their way - 155 in 21 overs, and still an Indian team got to within 30 runs of their total, without breaking a sweat, and giving up on the game in the last 6-7 overs.

Home advantage, chalta hai, these things are minor. Poms can argue that they dropped Rohit early, that Root/Morgan had off days, that Jofra was playing with a side strain.....excuses can't cut it at the elite level especially when two top teams lock horns in a WC tussle.

Quote

Consider the alternative - if Dhoni  & Jadhav had done what Pant and Pandya did, and gotten out in the 45th over - it would have definitely helped England take more confidence from yesterday's win, than they do today.

Sure we lost the game, but there is no need to venture into tin-foil hat territory, or start throwing hate-filled feces at the team.

ICFers don't care nearly as much about England's psychology as India's, majority posters here are Indians. There will always be some worries, emotions, analysis, rants, suggestions etc when India loses. I haven't read all threads but whatever little I have seen the behavior is normal.

I don't love the outcome, but its not the worst thing in the world.  And from a certain perspective, it even makes a bit of sense.

Even I don't mind the outcome, we aren't an ATG team and in this brutal format one or more losses is par for the course even for favorites. I always believe that for non-ATG teams (any sport) it is better to get the stinker out of the way in group stage. We had 2 stinkers, once batting first (Afg) and once chasing yesterday. It isn't all that bad, now hopefully all our bad performances alloted for this WC are out of the system.

n one hand you are ok with Dhoni and Jadhav shutting down at 5 wickets down

I'm not "OK" with it.  But I recognize the logic behind doing it in a meaningless game with 7 overs to go.

but Rohit and Virat are supposed to take all the risks being the top 2 batsmen in the side with apparently only 3 other bats to follow  who might give up citing the reason discussed above

Same logic applies for Rohit and Virat yesterday, and I'm more accepting of their choice - for yesterday's game - My first post in this thread defends both of these choices.

But I'm definitely more frustrated and focused on this long-running issue than with Dhoni's and Jadhav's limitations.  Why am I more concerned about Virat and Sharma, and the top order's methods, as opposed to the lower order's limitations?  Because it is infinitely more realistic and possbile to recognize and address the former issue, as compared to the latter.

With Pant now bolstering the middle order with Pandya - there are no other options sitting on the bench, in the squad, or even in India, who can be expected to walk into the team, to replace Jadhav with a skillset that's a sure-fire upgrade on him.  For better or worse, Jadhav is our best option - for now - as a lower order batsman, who can bowl spin with some degree of proven effectiveness at the international level.  We can't replace Jadhav with Karthik, because we need to have a reasonable 6th option in the team for bowling.

Its well within the realm of possibility to expect the Indian top order to improve on 28 in 10 overs, than to expect the lower middle order to consistently give you 100 in the last 10, time after time.

That team did bunch of things wrong.  Their star spinner took drugs to hide his steroid usage.

Digressing for a moment but I think Warne took diuretics which help in weight loss. I might have to rewind that episode...many boxers, wrestlers, BJJ/MMA/MT fighters use diuretics to cut weight (mainly water weight) before their fights, many get busted.

Another myth of the "great" Australian team of the 2000s that did no wrong.  That team did bunch of things wrong.  Their star spinner took drugs to hide his steroid usage.  Their star players took bookie money and their board covered it up.  That team unfairly treated quality players like Damien Martyn, Simon Katich etc.  Played crap cricket and gave Mathew Hayden a chance to break Lara's record against Zimbabwe.  Then whinged worse than England, when Lara broke it again, against England, not a minnow like Zim.

Plenty of **** things done by that so-called great team.  But once a team wins consistently for years and years, people looking back in history tend to view them with rose-tinted glasses.

When I went to Barbados for the WT20, I met a Trinidadian couple who were also cricket fans - you know what they told me?  That they saw the Australian team pull an Afridi and pound the playing surface area with their spikes during the WC final in 2007.  With their own eyes.

We are not going emotional here. We are just talking cricket and wins. What happened behind closed doors is none of my concerns. Neither can you, with any proof say that the same things are not happening with Indian cricket.

It also acts as a masking agent to hide the presence of other chemicals in drug tests.  That's why its banned even for sports where weight loss/gain aren't much of a direct advantage.

Its not about getting 'emotional'.  All I am saying is that the choice made by the Indian team yesterday, while not to our liking, and frustrating - shouldn't be cited as evidence of their 'lack of greatness'.  Compare their results to that ATG Aus team.  No problems.  I hope they continue winning and achieve that level of success.  Hold them and measure them by that yardstick of performance.  But let's not talk BS about "attitude" etc and give unnecessary, undeserving credit to that Aussie team.

The problem was not losing it can happened to any team , but the approach they took to lose was disgusting and cowardly. Hard to accept, but No way we will win the WC.

One thing I can say, with dhoni, pant and pandya, we can confidently polish off 80 from 10 without hiccup. And we have a top order to make us reach there without risk.we have to keep opposition around 300 if bowling first. Very few teams would have scored 306/5 with minimal risk against such odd situations, pitch and absurd strategy boundaries. So this gives us confidence. Almost everything went england's way including drs. 2 less sixes from chahal kuldeep full tosses and a six here and there from our top order, result would have been opposite.so keep calm, and wait for a detoriating edgbaston pitch where hopefully eng would chase.

why do we need to waste reams and reams of webspace discussing this match?

a 5th grade school kid will tell you that India decided to lose the game "safely" ( to keep NRR safe) to dent Pakistan's semifinal chances. and also ensured that if in case Pakistan scrape thru to semis, we would not be facing a fluke team like Pakistan. and what a brilliant masterstroke it was! take a bow Ravi Shastri, that is strategic masterclass.
