Norman Posted November 14, 2019 Posted November 14, 2019 No. He hasn't done enough with the bat to get a place in the top5. At best, he can play as a spinning all-rounder at no.7 keeping 2023 in mind.
Gollum Posted November 14, 2019 Posted November 14, 2019 Good idea, we are under-utilizing his batting talent. One out of Sundar/Pant (or Ishan if things don't improve for the Delhi boy) as opener, the other at #5, someone like Krunal or Jaddu at #7/8...right/left combo evenly distributed in the line up. 30+ T20s to go, sure as hell hope TM stops being so rigid, current formula won't win us the Cup.

Sundar has flashed ample batting potential, and needs to be given space to develop, instead of keeping him lower down the order, where he will only be asked to throw his bat around in situations where there is high pressure to score. Out of current lot of the Jadejas, Axars, Krunals, Nitish - Sundar is so far the most promising candidate, with the highest ceiling. I agree that he has not delivered or 'earned' his way to a slot, but its in the team's interests to develop him. And he has already proven himself with the ball in hand in T20s. Norman 1
jf1gp_1 Posted November 14, 2019 Posted November 14, 2019 Why sundar? Why not axar or jayant Yadav or Ashwin or jaddu.

Jaddu has proven himself not capable enough to bat at high scoring levels, or be reliable. Krunal is a question mark, his batting against short quick stuff is suspect, but he hasn't separated himself from Sundar with either bat or ball in hand. Both Sundar and Krunal have similar performances, and Sundar has age on his side, as well as 'looks' the better batting prospect, at least technically. But yes, Krunal and Sundar are similar prospects - call it gut, call it whatever, I like Sundar, and want to see him given an opportunity. Kedar is a batsman who bowls a bit. I am looking to find more reliable bowlers for the Indian team, guys who can be much stronger than Kedar with the ball, while still bringing some batting reliability and thump to the table. Vihari again, is a batsman, who can turn his arm over. I want a player in the Indian LOI squad who can regularly bowl a full quote of overs if called upon, consistently and economically. i.e. a proper bowler. Vihari is nowhere close to that.

sandeep Posted November 14, 2019 Author Posted November 14, 2019 @maniac Usually your "acumen" only strikes when the bandwagon is so large that a frog can't help himself but get on it. In this case, you are choosing to jump on early, which makes me seriously worried about Sundar's fate considering you such a massive jinx.

Loved the way he kept his calm for a teenage rookie in the 2017 IPl when he burst on the scene. Was impressed the way he led a rookie attack in the Nidihaas as the main go to bowler. Even in a couple of innings I have seen him when he gets to face at best 5-10 deliveries, he looks absolutely assured and calm at the crease. That is half the battle won, the mental strength. They don’t teach you that.
Sooda Posted November 14, 2019 Posted November 14, 2019 It is an interesting left field call...as he looks "better " than a no 7, also I am not sure how good he is at coming in at having a slog from ball no 1 (tho he did well at Delhi T20). For me, at full strength Hardik should be at 5 in both formats (Virat, Iyer, Hardik, Pant at 3 to 6 )- . If we are playing a dead rubber bi lateral then yes, it is worth experimenting... but even then, there are actual "batsmen" who have done more to be given a chance at as high as slot as no 5. You can raise question marks over their technique I dont think there are many better T20I candidates than Surya Kumar Yadav and Nitish Rana (more of a no 5 and he can bowl a bit)- both have earned a good run, should have happened a long time ago in fact.
Ankit_sharma03 Posted November 14, 2019 Posted November 14, 2019 (edited) Talking about ODI Cricket- Our top 4 are fixed- Dhawan, rohit, kohli, Iyer. (if dhawan or iyer fails guys like rahul, gill , pandey will be looked at ) which means 5th slot is taken by keeper batsman. Unless the idea is to make keeper bat at 6 which i think wont be right coz kishen n pant are far more impactful n talented then sundar with bat. For assumption lets give keeper batsman 6th slot - then remains 5th slot for which Players sundar compete with for 6th batsman bowler role- Dubey, jadeja, Shankar, manish Pandey Dubey- Yet to prove but if he does his batting gives surely more muscle then sundar. Sundar is definitely ahead of him as bowler Jadeja- I knw he has been the biggest fraud for 10 yrs with bat but sometimes he has shown in odi that if he has time in his hand he can bat well....his failure was also due to no.7 spot which didnt suit him .So if batting higher n giving someone more balls is the idea as of now ill try jadeja 1st . Reason- Experience, better power game when set , others skills bowling n batting on which he scores over everyone. After his semi final innings he deserves one proper shot but at 5,6 if he is made to bat at 7 i fear same will happen. Shankar- In terms of solidity he scores over everyone and i rate him very highly as batsman. People have just dismissed on 2 failures in Wc game in which also he looked set but got out. He is a good fielder to . Where he lacks - power game and his bowling wont be much of use when Wc is in India . Manish pandey- TM has looked to play just 5 bowlers at time and this guy has been with team for long so i think somewere they will try him to . Nitish Rana- another guy but he has to prove it for A-teams for a while now Before Sundar ill give jadeja, shankar, dubey (only if shows some potential in t20) a shot. Sundar experiment can be tried in A games and even for his State. As of now i feel we have better options.....neways i feel giving less balls to guys like pant n kishen would be a lil unfair. Ankit_sharma03 Posted November 14, 2019 Posted November 14, 2019 Talking about t20 Cricket- Top 4 is kind of fixed apart from dhawan who if looses his place wud loose to Rahul or in future may be samson, shaw, gill . Pant n Kishen can be tried but m not sure that will happen so soon. Now comes keeper slot at 5,6 with pant failing DK will soon come into picture and he can bat at 6 Players sundar compete with for 6th batsman bowler role- Dubey, Krunal, Manish pandey, SKY, jadeja Dubey- Yet to prove but power game gives advantage, bowling lesser then sundar Krunal- Krunal n sundar both have done well . Sundar is a better batsman then krunal for sure but at the end i feel this will come down to captain's choice. I personally would prefer krunal as i feel he is someone who does well in pressure games. jadeja- I wnt be surprised if he is also in line knowing TM cant distinguish between formats. manish pandey- already in line SKY - the way he has been performing in IPL n domestic i feel he is about to get chance . He doesnt offer bowling but batting impact definately higher then Sundar. Yes he ll also have to prove Considering all options- it ll depend what u want power in batting which makes u take SKY n Dube but they are yet to be proven. So Sundar comes near to earn this spot But here is when i get in doubt if m sending sundar at 5 and giving him more balls then why dont i send pandya who deserves more balls. Which means sundar plays low in which case his power game needs to be seen in long run. So even when i feel he is not bad for that slot there are other with more potential that look more tempting for that slot
