Yuvraj Singh wants to come out of retirement, writes to BCCI president Sourav Ganguly

Former India batsman Yuvraj Singh has decided to come out of retirement and play in domestic cricket for Punjab, and has written a letter to BCCI president Sourav Ganguly. The southpaw announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in June 2019 after that he featured in the Global T20 league in Canada and the T10 league in Dubai last year.

The Punjab team is going through a rebuilding phase and Yuvraj has built a good rapport with team members like Shubman Gill, Prabhsimran Singh, Anmolpreet Singh, Abhishek Sharma and Harpreet Brar, after having taken a few closed-doors training sessions at the PCA stadium. 

 

"I enjoyed spending time with these youngsters, and talking to them about various aspects of the game, I realised that they were able to pick up various things that I was telling them," Yuvraj was quoted by Cricbuzz.

 "I had to get into the nets to show them a few other elements, and I was pleasantly surprised at how well I was hitting the ball even though I hadn't held a bat for a really long time."

Earlier, Puneet Bali, the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) secretary, has made a request to the veteran all-rounder to come out of retirement to play for the state team in the impending domestic season. 

 

 

"I also trained for those two months, and then I started to bat in the off-season camp. I made runs in some of the practice matches. Mr Puneet Bali, the secretary of the Punjab Cricket Association, approached me after one of the sessions and asked me if I would reconsider coming out of retirement."

"The motivation is to help Punjab win championships. Bhajji (Harbhajan Singh), myself, we have won tournaments, but we haven't done it together for Punjab, so that was a big factor in my final call," Yuvraj points out. "Obviously, Shubman is already playing for India, and I feel there's plenty of potential in the other three boys. If I can contribute in any way to their development and to the development of Punjab cricket, then that will be wonderful. After all, playing for Punjab is what paved the way for my international career," he added.

According to the report, Yuvraj has sent a mail to BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah, to seek their permission to come out of retirement. 

Yuvraj has made it clear in the mail that if he is allowed to play for Punjab again, then he will not pursue his options of playing outside the country.

"As things stand now, I will be playing only T20s if I get the nod," Yuvraj observes. "But who knows, let's see," Yuvraj said.

Good , its always good for youngsters to have a senior around them...they learn quickly. Punjab has some really good talent coming up.

Bhajji shud have been doing this as well for last few years, even dhoni to it ll be great for their domestic teammates

Yuvraj may simply want to play one more Ranji season for old-times sake, maybe he likes being around the younger ones - I have seen multiple reports that indicate that Yuvi has in fact, been a quality mentor to the Punjab  Ranji team. 

 

It could also be that he's trying to lay the platform for a potential second innings maybe in coaching etc.  Talented players like Yuvi who weren't really seen as "thinking" or 'hard-working' often find it harder to make that transition and pick up good coaching opportunities.  Often because they are reluctant to put in the hard yards of getting certified, or putting in some time and gaining coaching experience at the lower levels.  A season or 2 as a 'player-coach' could not only help the Punjab team, but also help Yuvi.

Bhajji pays lip service to the concept of mentorship, but doesn't come across - at least to me - as the kind of mentor I'd want for future players.

yeah.. and in todays world a coach/ mentor assumes even more importance in keeping the talented youngsters grounded and focused.. away from vicious career spoiling distractions

And Yuvi is not the Rahul Dravid 'boring' types - young ones will actually listen to what Yuvi will have to say about 'distractions' etc.  Yuvi has gone on record multiple times, praising the work ethic of the newer generation - Virat Kohli etc, and voicing regret about how he wished he had been similar in his younger days.  When a 'cool cat' like Yuvi relays that message to a 20 year old rising cricketer, it has a much greater chance of 'sticking' than if a Rahul Dravid or some fat old coach says it.

Since most of us have a perceived notions of sportsmen, i wouldnt be able to say  how many juniors will come and try to pick his brain or benefit from Yuvis presence in the dressing room.
But we can safely vouch for a fact that a Dravid or a Laxman would surely help a youngster if they were to be approached.
Yuvi hardly looks the type, surely there is a personal agenda for him.

This is what happens when u bat with an Exp player, how parthiv is guiding devdutt through every ball , keeping him calm and also have a good eye on what opp is doing.

Its very important that our senior give 1-2 years post retirement to domestic cricketers. The reason people learn a lot quickly in county n ipl is by having senior international players. Once pollock told how playing with marshal in county made him what he was.

 Yuvi actually has a very good acumen for the game. He never came across as captaincy material in his playing days because of his image and may be he is not good at leading different personalities but he has a great eye for talent and actually can be a very good coach.
 

I am sure he is not delusional to think he can make an international comeback. IPL has moved on as we saw last year so if he can be a mentor and coach to youngsters it is a welcome move. In fact I wish more top players did what he wants to do.

 

Also unless Yuvi has made multiple bad investments don’t think he needs the money either for 2 lifetimes at least so clearly he doing this for passion, so nothing but respect
