Mayank is loosing his chances

After NZ series this series is also not helping him cement the place as 3rd opener. Yes eventually when rohit comes he ll walk in XI but 3rd opener slot is open in ODIs which Mayank has a shot at but he is loosing his chances

 

Post NZ series he was dropped from Next Sa home series which got cancelled due to covid. Cut to IPL he scores , shaw fails so he books a spot to australia and as luck wud have it rohit got injured so everything worked out for him but scores arent coming 

 

After 5 odis he is just avg 17 , i fear next game might be his last coz there are guys like gill and samson knocking on door as well

Time to move on from Mayank. Let him focus on test cricket.

 

Need to make Gill or Shaw as permanent backup opener option to Rohit and Dhawan. Whoever of the two retires before 2023, Gill or Shaw comes in. Preferably, it will be Dhawan as Rohit will certainly play the 2023 World Cup.

Let Rahul and Mayank open in 3rd ODI and in the T20Is, Despite being supremely fit, Dhawan (at 35) should not be playing dead rubbers or in T20Is (ideally should not be playing at all). 

 

And then Give them a proper run in LOIs vs weaker opposition - SL, Zim etc we play later this year.

5 ODI is not enough matches to drop a new comer. If we start dropping players lick this then it's nithing different than what fickle minded Kohli does. Give him one or two more series. Then take a decision. Otherwise it's a circus which Kohli did to find No. 4.

He was the only one who got out to a wicket taking delivery.  But he has to cash in on these limited chances he's getting no doubt.

For an opener to survive one really needs to be good against the short stuff, you take out the history of Indian openers right from Gavaskar, Tendulkar, Sehwag, Rohit, Dhawan apart from Ganguly, every Indian opener was good against Short bowling. Even Dada had to improve his game against Short stuff, He had his own mechanism of dealing with short pitch stuff, getting outside the line to cutting it for six or getting inside the line and flicking it over fine leg and it worked. With Mayank I see a worry there, he's done okay so far in Test matches, but in ODIs you can't get away without scoring of short bowling. He hasnt been good against Short stuff in ODIs yet, hence I wouldn't rate him yet, but I hope he proves me wrong, because this boy can bat, needs to work on his technique against the short stuff.

Shaw was actually continued after NZ series but poor ipl and mayank having good IPL resulted in a change

how do you conclude  that? Mayank is a proven performer at the highest form of the game with very consistent numbers as well as performances.

 

While I have no doubt that Gill has the talent to be the next torchbearer of Indias batting legacy, jury is still out and hope he performs.

 

Coming to Shaw he has been a huge let down. The guy is a throw back to 1960 cricket with his fitness and fielding and has known to

make dumb decisions and throw attitude. That part about his attitude  is only hearsay though however Mayank is way more established and proven than Shaw at this point.

Because the focus is on 2023 World Cup and you look at which player will be having peak years then.

 

Mayank will be 32 during WC 2023 and if he can hit a purple patch for India in next 2-3 years then we can have an opener at its prime playing for us in WC 2023.

 

Gill and Shaw will be 24 only and I firmly believe a players peak period is 26-33. They will still be relatively younger. So prioritize Mayank but if he fails too much then move on from him and play Gill/Shaw.

Wild theories? What is the point of talent if it doesn't come off? Did you not see KL Rahul two years ago, how much he struggled? What was Rohit doing when he was young? Players mature and do better with more experience.

Mayank never deserved a run? The guy reeled off 100s for fun for India A in list A matches smoking all the opposition in Aus, Eng, SA. No one has batted better for India A in list A cricket like Mayank did a couple of years back. He has broken the door open through his performances after being repeatedly ignored (perhaps based on his sub par IPL stats at RCB under Kohli?)

 

Better to give him a run. Let Dhawan and Kohli get rested from the 3rd ODI.

Opening is the best place to bat in LOIs so Mayank is lucky to be slotted in there .... In the last two games, Ind was chasing mammoth totals so difficult to judge his performances but should look to make it count when Ind bats first

Mayank is a very good bat, deserves his spot but he’s a good fringe player at best . While I would l like him to do well, don’t think it would be a big loss if he dosent cement his place.

OP is lost. Mayank has done well so far and I don't know what powerful stuff op is drinking but he needs to share it with rest of us. mayank deserves to play as he has done well.

in his 5 match ODi career he made 86 runs at an avg of 17, u call that doing well
