Jadeja averages 48.6 with the bat in 24 tests in the last 4 years.  Averages 46+ away from home in this period.

It is probably the best after Kohli and Pujara.

He scored 81 in one the 2 tests he played in Australia last time and followed it with a 58 in tough batting conditions in the WI.

Playing Jadeja over Rahul, won't be a compromise on the batting front ... especially because he is an attacking left hander too.

numbers are promising but under the circumstances, we ought to have gone with a specialist batsman in my view.  Plus the allrounder in Jadeja never really comes to the fore in overseas. Its either the avg batsman or avg bowler.. rarely both.

I don't expect much from his bowling in Australia, except the Melbourne test, which is spin friendly.

But check Jadeja's batting numbers in the last 4 years and a bit ( batting average of 49.5 ) ... starting from the 3rd test against England in 2016.

And his outside-Asia batting stat in this period ( batting average of 41 3 )

For all those championing the cause of Rahul's inclusion, I agree with you all. He is one of the best batsman in the country & deserves to play but not in place of Vihari. He is deserves a place ahead of Rahane. We have seen the best of Rahane, his inconsistencies, his threshold as a batsman.

Vihari should play all 3 remaining tests & the Eng series. Top domestic performer like him deserves one complete series at home before sidelined.

Also people rejoicing about Gill should not celebrate much, next match he ll be out for Rohit unless he gets a 50 plus score & Agarwal fails spectacularly.

Vihari.

I can understand their strategy now. If they would've replaced Vihari by KL in this match, I’d been difficult to drop KL in next match to make way for Rohit.
This way, they know Vihari being mediocre, possibly fail again and will be replaced by Rohit.

So everybody gets couple of matches...

KL have to wait for Pant to suck badly in this series to replace him as a makeshift keeper/batsman. Pant himself is a makeshift Keeper/batsman.

Spray gun Umesh is now the senior bowler who will pick few lucky wickets at the expense of bucket loads of runs...

Happy to see 4 changes.  Also, very happy that KL is not included in the playing 11.  His recent batting style does not suit test format.   Let him focus on T20 and ODIs right now.

agree but that is as an opener. He should be a decent guy in the MO

It will be tough for Gill as well on top aginst Cummins & co with their tail up. His confidence can be shattered as well like Shaw's. Rahul should have opened and Gill could have batted at 4. I also dont think Pujara has a lot of cricket left...so Gill will eventually replace him at no.3 when Kohli returns.

Rohit is a TTF overseas..  But due to seniority culture that may happen.  In an ideal world both Mayank & Gill should get remaining 3 games with no objections.

Rohit won't play.

Nah....he is too senior a player to go for a tour just to quatantine. They will play him or the wrath of the mumbai lobby will be on Rahane and bewda....both from mumbai.

So Jadeja is replacing Kohli. :hysterical:

What a chewtya team! Vihari there for his usual 8(52).

Kuldeep Yadav replaced Kohli in dharmashala match, when rahane first led india against aussies. Won the match and the series

So our tail starts at 4. Rahul should have played considering he is our second best batsman after Kohli.

Rahul should have played first test itself.

In Dharamshala we will win if we replace Kohli with even a piece of wood.

This is a different story altogether. We were bowled out for our lowest ever score in the previous innings and then they go on to replace the best batsman in the team (by a country mile) with a bowling all rounder.

Don't you see the absurdity of all this?

In the batting line-up, effectively it is Pant replacing Kohli and Jadeja replacing Saha.

How does that even work?
