Actually Shardul wont be a bad option. Honestly, none of Shardul, Natarajan or Saini are quality test match bowlers. Saini is still too wayward, Shardul or  Natarajan dont have the quality pace or skills to be effective against a side like Australia. Because all of them are third choice with the absence of main bowlers, what you are looking is for them to support the attack which is Bumrah, Siraj, Ashwin and Jaddu. So you need a bowler who can bowl wicket to wicket, keep it tight for others to attack. If they can build pressure, might get a couple of wickets if batsmen look to play shots against them.

Shardul could be the best choice given his first class experience, success in A tours and reasonable success in bowling tight lines in limited overs and also can bat a bit. Saini could be the worst option because he could be wayward and give away lot of runs which would also relieve the pressure.

There are faster bowlers in india then shardul . Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan have them . Could have picked any .. but they chose shardul as backup

Thats because he is already there in Australia and with this strict quarantine rule, it is impossible to fly someone back from India.

Thats where they had selected few bowlers as backup/netbowlers like nagarkoti, porel etc, too bad they are also injured.

Have you seen Saini get butchered in limited overs games in Australia ? Even Nattu outbowled him. He didnt impress in the practice games also. Yes, Shardul's overall economy rate could be high but he has bowled well in some games as well. In an ideal world, none of these guys should be playing tests for India unless they improve drastically.

Congrats on not even reading the whole message before replying. Saini didnt do much in practice games against first class cricketers. Is he going to suddenly turn and up and become a match winning test bowler. He looks still very raw to me, like Umesh Yadav or Ishant in his early days.

anybody has pictures of SCG pitch?

too early i think, lot of changes will happen in the last week to the playing square.  Right now it will probably have a lot of grass on it.

Wonder why the gap between T2 and T3 is so long, and no tour game either.  Not ideal.  Normally I thought Aus series has a New Years test after Boxing day no?

BCCI request. CA wanted Jan 3rd start, then obliged. Don't remember the reason.

Ishant was terrific in his early days

Who takes practice games srsly, they are just meant to try few things. Siraj was going costly there as well.
