T Natarajan could make his debut at the SCG - TOI

Play Saini.

He has been groomed as a test match pacer and has bowled over after over in FC cricket and Unofficial tests for the A team.

He knows how to sustain intensity and pace while bowling 20 + overs a day. Natarajan is not good at this

Choosing a pacer ... just because he is a left armer ... is a big folly.

Since the pitch is going to be on the slower side, it doesn't matter who they are going to pick. Might as well play one more spinner. Saini was erratic and expensive during LOI leg. He knows he didn't use the opportunity well to make his case.

Bumrah, Siraj, Ashwin, Jadeja and Kuldeep

It looks like an ideal bowling attack for pitches like in Sri Lanka, but let's hope SCG turns out to be spin friendly and Rahane or Pujara score 170-180 in an innings.

Ian Chappell specifically mentioned Kuldeep's name because he thought Aussies don't handle wrist spin well.

Kuldeep - left arm wrist spin bringing ball into right hand batsman

Ashwin - Traditional off spin bowler

Jadeja - left arm spin bringing ball away from right hand batsman

And Kuldeep got 5 wickets in SCG last time.

Not only is Natarajan the wrong choice because he is not likely to have the stamina, incisiveness or pace for a Test match.  But also, it will be unfair on him, what a great story he has had so far.

Now I would go with Saini, and then also saw this forecast for the game:

Looks like showers and cloudy conditions for long periods.

Surely that will impact the bowler selection.

And batsmen too come to think of it.

Looks like ICF is not getting its way again with the team selection. Cue the outrage in 3, 2 and ......

Is the weather the reason Thakur is in there?  Can bowl his dibbly dobs, can bat a little (presumably)

Don't know man we don't play even 3 spinners in India mostly.  If Ashwin was bowling badly then perhaps Kuly could've been tried but it hasn't happened.  Need a 3rd pacer especially when It is expected to rain at Sydney.  Overcast skies may help pacers.  That's why we all wanted Prasidh to tour as well.  Prasidh >> Saini & Shardul

Picking dibly doobly pacer over proven A tour bowler would be disaster. Lets get real people, Natarajan should be 3rd priority with Saini and Shardul in squad.

We should not mix format as well, Both Shami and Bumrah were also bashed in ODIs. Same was said about Siraj also after his white ball antics that he isnt ready for this level. As erratic as Saini is, he definitely should be preferred over Natu-Shardul. Has toiled hard in A tours and domestics to earn the test call.

If the pitch turns out be slow in Sydney, then Saini will get hit for fours. I have seen that Warner, Smith and Labuschagne are comfortable against pace, while they can have problems against quality spin bowling.

Also the red kookaburra doesn't swing even under overcast skies, only medium pacers like Philander and Abbas can do that.

Injuries to Umesh and Shami have created confusions to select the best team for Sydney, but if had to pick one from Natarajan, Saini and Kuldeep, I would probably be more inclined to pick Kuldeep even though playing 3 spinners in Australia is as risky as playing Vinay Kumar in Perth.

For Gabba, I would definitely go for Saini because Gabba is the most bouncy pitch in Australia.
