People hardly use more than 20 year old vehicles anyway

Maybe now, it’s true. A lot in south metros choose ola, uber (pool is very popular) and zoomcar renting. Probably nobody buys 800, 1000, Omni anymore in used market.

Financing is easily available too.

^ Govt wants disinvestment. so do people, who want disinvestment. If anyone else including kejri, Amrindher Singh or Pappu wants to fill tender, buy  and run those orgs, no one  is stopping them. But don’t for a moment think that those against  govt disinvestment policy look anything but pre 1990 Sarkari babu mentality.

ps: i have been seeing such memes against Indian industrilist. For example, some chewts  who are against jio, reliance, but same chewts support vodaphone annd amazon. No, they themselves ate sold out.

dude i know your tendency to give the opposing argument  but think about it. those who work in auto industry is far lesser than auto buyers. basically you can call this scrapping as an indirect tax on the masses. while the auto workers get a few bread crumbs at a certain point, there is no surety that this will continue but those at the upper echelons of the auto industry can make it like another ambani. I wouldn't be surprised if ambani and other big dogs haven't invested in some auto industry after this budget (if you wanna go into conspiracy theories, there is a high likelihood that they may have done this even before it was released because of inside info)

How is it an indirect tax?

Most people *do not* have a car more than 20 year old. Those who do, end up paying huge amounts on their RCs and periodic PUCs. These are recurring year on year expenses. Not to mention the poor mileage and the associated incremental fuel costs.

By the government guaranteeing to scrap them, the owners may even get a better deal than they would by selling it to a second hand car dealer.

Who exactly is losing out here?

If there is a substantial pool of such cars, the Govt of India can revive the auto scrapping industry, provide employment. Phase out old fuel inefficient cars and reduce the carbon foot print. Also the Mint mentions that a sizable share of the scrap metal from automobiles does not go back to the automobile sector but to Indian railways!

Because it has been made into a law. I know several people who own old vehicles. If people are selling old vehicles for better fuel mileage, that should be in the owner's choice not the govt. This rule is made to benefit the auto industry big shots and not the common man. With regard to employment, most of the assembly is done by automation. Only a limited number of people are employed to guide the machinery to assemble the parts. Its not like all the engine parts are made by men as was the case with earlier times.

Highly recommend people to not get their information from Watsapp. We will only end up with bunch of literate morons.

India's population 1.366 B. There are 248 Mil households that is 24.8 crore. There are 1.2 Gas connections per family. If subsidies for 40 crore families have been terminated that means did 24.8 crore families had 40 crore connections?

7-8 crore poor families have 7-8 crore gas connections 1 each.

12-15 crore middle class would have 12-15 crore gas connections 1 each.

This leaves 1-2 crore higher middle class and upper class families who would use 17-18 crore gas connections.

I am not sure if economic classification of households in india is correct or not. I could be wrong but article says there are 27.76 crore total gas connections in india. But somehow 40 crore parivar lost the benefit. My head is hurting very bad now. Help needed.

Diesel subsidy has to be done with, esp to this gas gurgling SUVs occupied by fat rich snobs playing loudest crap music in cities. In other markets diesel is costlier than Petrol

It's nowhere as bad as it was earlier. There is no 'subsidy' as such, it's just that overall taxes might be slightly lesser keeping commercial vehicles & transportation costs in mind for inflation purposes. BS6 pushed diesel car supply & demand even lower.

Yeah, there are heavy investments into infrastructure and health. However, I am generally not a fan of Keynesian fiscal stimuli like this. We will see if it ends up affecting inflation.

We are now finally beginning to see first steps of a centre right govt in economic sense. A country cannot grow by shaming its entrepreneurs. They should not be worshipped but wealth creation is the fulcrum on which economies and lives are built.

By taking ultra leftist and socialist positions in first 6 years, he won the confidence of the poor. Now, he knows is the time to ride wave of reforms.
